but at the same time you have to admit that religious people are so freakin' nice

and they make all these organizations to try to help people
and and they do all this good stuff all in the name of god

so i think i will take my kids to church even if i don't believe in god because then they will meet really awesome nice people who believe in being awesome and nice

I don't personally believe in God, but I do respect the people who do. I just don't like it when religious people try to make me a convert or something of the sort.

I think people can be good and self-less without being religious. I do respect people who are religious, but I won't go so far as to take my kids to church. I also know many religious people who are not nice at all and who do not respect others. Religion does not equal good.

i don't believe in god. i'm a person who believes her eyes and without seeing i will have no faith. I haven't talked to him nor have i looked at him personally. i have second thoughts about there being hell or heaven.. have you seen the place with your eyes? NO, then how do you know it exsits. I'm person who has relies on facts or i know something or someobdy and their way of thinking. Like swirlygirl said church can also have so people that you wouldn't like

as for me, i've prayed to god before when some bad (and i mean bad) things have happened to me and i'm desperate, and when i did my prayers were answered. it's hard not to have faith when that happens, considering i already think of myself as an unlucky person to begin with

i guess i shouldn't be in this thread considering im not an atheist :D

Now I don't know if the bible, quran, and torah all that religious stuff are true but there has to be a supreme being.

I must agree with people that some of the stuff in the bible and other religious text do represent the ideals of man, and GOD may be a product of humans and an explanation for the unexplained.

We can learn about everything and the entire history of the Universe, but if there is no God or something that made all this then it's like dividing by 0. There is no purpose and explanation and the entire Universe doesn't exist and everything isn't real.

How could the everything exist with GOD: and higher being

^ I'm not Christian, but I'll answer for you.

(Most?) Christians believe that God has given you the choice to accept or reject him. If you reject him (by doing things that go against him - no I don't mean just little offenses), that was your choice and you will be treated accordingly.

It's the exact same thing in a secular society: how can a society claim to be good and just if it condones murder or other evils? The society does not become evil by virtue of the fact that it does not tolerate all behavior.

But what if you were born and didn't want to be born. Or what if you never wanted to accept GOD in the first place but still adhered to goodness? You may feel like that you are forced to accept God or else face eternal damnation.

Why doesn't he give us a choice of respecting him and his wishes but not truly embracing him and his love?

I'm not against GOD but I feel like I have a right to question his motives.

^ wow ur from GA too.. where from? To all people that have a feeling of god: Where was god when the Jews were in the concentration camps and were kept captive? Americans helped them and if god truly has power than he can stop the bad but Jesus being a Jew, how can he let that happen to his own people? Many Jews were innocent yet died for no reason

Yes, that's exactly my point. Sorry I didn't state that in my original question. If Christians believe that we need to adhere to most of God's "desires" (?) in order to go to heaven, then wouldn't it be unjust to send someone who is good and all but doesn't follow God's desires to hell? Wouldn't that make god a selfish, intolerant being? That's the impression I get from most Christians..but since I'm not religious..correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm assuming you accept the idea of a God? Well, whether you wanted to be born or not, life is a gift and not everyone receives it. As for not accepting God but still "adhering to goodness," I believe that from a Christian perspective you cannot reject God and still be good. The two are not mutually exclusive. And you cannot be forced to accept God. Choosing God must be done freely and no matter what people do to you, if it's not in your heart, it's not true.

Very simply: free will. You either believe it or you don't. Some faiths believe that God allows humans to choice what they want to do, good or horrendously evil.
