So I've heard a lot of talk that Lefties are usually smarter than Righties. I don't know if this is true 100%, but from what I've been seeing, Lefties do tend to be smarter. My Geometry teacher is left-handed and he taught us VERY well. I have lots of friends who are left-handed and are usually smarter than me. I think Lefties are smarter because the majority of people are right-handed, so I think Lefties got used to using their left hand, and maybe just see things from a different perspective.

Are you right handed and also agree with me on this?

Are you right handed but don't agree on this?

Are you left handed and agree with me on this?

Are you left handed and don't agree on this?

I’m a leftie and i definately agree…there have been studies to prove this…most famous politicians and other famous people are left handed. It’s because we begin using are right aside of the brain before righties and therefor foster our creativity and critical thinking.

I’m right handed. While I don’t think all lefties are smarter than rights, I think that they just get an IQ boost of some sort.
Example-
Random Left handed person: IQ 110
Same person if they were to be right handed: IQ 100

^^^(This is not to scale or anything; that was just the easiest way to explain it without using the word “smarterer” lol)

I’m a leftie…thing about left hand is that the right hemisphere controls the left hand. But I’m not sure if I would say that I’m predominantly right-brained. I’m more of a math/logic person :)

Annoying thing about being left handed is writing essays in pencil…smears :P

I am a lefty as well. It has it’s up’s and downs here and there. I feel like I’m somewhat book smart. I was ranked 9th in my class of 110 and I didn’t even try at all my freshman year. But I also have my creative side as well. I play the guitar and drums. I also write and compose my own songs using Guitar Pro 6. I can’t draw to save my life and I feel like I have no common sense anymore because I tend to overthink everything for some reason. Haha.

A lot of my left-handed friends are very creative-esque whether it’s drawing or music related. I’m pretty happy I am. It makes me feel unique :D

No, I don’t agree. I am right-handed, but I can write with my left if I want. My girlfriend is left-handed and is just as smart as I am (130 IQ). She’s majoring in Art and Psychology, I am majoring in Applied Mathematics and minoring in Physics. It may be just our genetics balancing us out, but I highly doubt that she had some extra “oomph” to get to where I am.

She has a very good memory and I have an OK memory. I am way more creative than she is and I am not an art major. She can’t write essays, I always kill them no problem. She can do organic chemistry naturally, I am horrible at chemistry. She’s quicker with arithmetic, all of the problems she had with calculus and physics were a breeze to me.

I don’t think there’s any advantage. People have different strengths and weaknesses. One thing for sure is we both have horrible handwriting.

I’m left handed and I would say that the average left hander will perform better than the average right hander. I have definitely noticed a lot more left handers in advanced classes than the average. If not more intelligent, left handers are able to handle adversity better. Many things that right handers take for granted are more difficult and/or embarrassing for left handers.

I’m left handed!!! At the Democratic office I volunteer with, majority of the teens are left handed. In school, I can only find 1 or 2 left handed people.

I’m right-handed and I don’t really agree. The majority of people are right-handed, so when an intelligent person is right-handed, we don’t really notice it or care to notice it. Since left-handed people are in the minority, we tend to take more notice of a left-handed person when we meet one… and I had a point, but I forgot what it was. :p

If your left handed then you use the right side of your brain (the creative and more philosophical side I think) while righties use their left brain lobe (the logical side). People who are more… philosophical or can understand abstract concepts and what not tend to have a higher understanding of things, and in turn, a higher IQ. People who are righties think a lot more straightforward and probably have lower IQs in general.

and I would have to disagree ShadowMist. 20% of Mensa (its a group you can apply to enter into if your IQ is above 132) members are left handed, 4 out of the 5 original designers of the Mac computer were left handed. Not to say that lefties are smarter, but they tend to have higher chances of being smarter than righties.

Coming from a lefty, who just did some research.

I am left handed, but I don’t buy into the silly generalizations people make. One cannot just say that left handed people are smart or better at X, because those claims are simply not true and not based on statistics.

^^Um no. How do you know those claims weren’t based off of statistics? Do you think someone just up and said, ‘the people we thought at first were devil children and inadequate we have actually figured out are smarter then us righthanders?’. Why would these sort of ‘tales’, so to speak, start if lefties were often discouraged?

No ones saying left handed people are ‘smart’. Most all the posts so far have said things like “I’ve noticed a lot of smart left handers” or “lefties tend to be smarter”. Help explain to me why 20% of Mensa members (a very world renowned organization) are left handers when lefties only make up <15% of the population. 2 percent of people qualify as gifted, and a large percent of that is of lefties, even though, again, they are the minority.

I’m not trying to say, oh, righties arent as smart–I’m just pointing out there are some facts here, some statistics, and a lot of studies going on .

also for the sake of this thread;
Lefty, IQ = 136
Currently have a 4.89 GPA ranked #1 in my class.
No one else in my family is a lefty (not my siblings parents aunts uncles grandparents), and in my household I have done the best academically by far (brother and sister graduated with <3.0 weighted GPAs out of 6.0. this might also be because I matured a little faster than them and have a more serious attitude towards college.)

I’m right handed and I’m better at English and wishy washy philosophy:) jk than STEM(wish it were otherwise). Both of my parents are engineers and are right handed. my brother is talented in math and he is right handed.

Anyways, rightbrainedness doesn’t automatically mean the person is less intelligent. A systematic right brained approach can also yield brilliant results.

Maybe I should train myself to be ambidextrous?
