Area Distribution Courses for LSA

Are students required to take courses in each of the five categories (Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Mathematical and Symbolic Analysis, and Creative Expression)?

Yes, unless you don’t want to graduate.
A liberal arts degree means that you’re “well-rounded.” You can check your progress on Wolverine Access.

Actually, you’re not required to take courses in all 5 of those categories. However, you have to take at least 7 credits in each of Natural Science, Social Science, and Humanities, and 3 credits in 3 out of those 5 categories you listed in your original post. Hope that makes sense.

Essentially:

You need 30 distribution credits. Out of these:

-7 must come from Natural Science, Social Science, AND Humanities (21 out of the 30)

-the remaining 9 credits can come from a variety of areas. You can get up to, but no more than, 3 additional credits in each of the core areas (NS, SS, HU)

-some of the remaining 9 credits can be interdisciplinary or creative expression as well.

to add to andre above, 3 credits from the additional nine can also be taken as MSA, or:

“Alternately, students may fulfill up to 9 of these credits by taking courses designated as Interdisciplinary (ID).”

and there is also the fourth term language proficiency and the race-ethnicity requirement.
