Classes outside of your major

If I want to major in mathematics at LSA, how many humanities/arts classes do I have to take?

At least two, and you can make that lower bound strict =P.

You have to meet distribution requirements, which consists of 30 credits. You need 7 in natural science, 7 in social sciences, 7 in humanities. Then you take 3 additional credits in 3 out of the following 6 categories: natural science, social science, humanities, creative expression, math and symbolic analysis, interdisciplinary. Generally math majors do something like 10 credits of physics for natural science (physics 390,400+ will count for distribution if you ask an advisor, even though it's not labeled that way on the courseguide), 10 credits of economics (same deal, if you take 400+ level econ classes, you'll need to ask an advisor to count them for distribution), 7 credits of humanities, and then 3 credits of math and symbolic analysis with computer science (you can't count classes from your primary major towards distribution, so you have to take something else to meet MSA).

There's also a first year writing requirement. If you're not in Honors, you will likely take english 124/125 to meet this. If you're in Honors, then you take great books for freshmen writing (it also counts as 4 credits of humanities for distribution), and you have to do a second "literature and ideas" course, which most likely will also count towards distribution.

So if you're not in Honors, you'll need to do one english class and two other humanities classes. If you're in Honors, you can finish off writing and humanities with only 2 classes.
