I'm a freshman at California community college. I'm planning to transfer in Fall 2012, so I'm start applying now. I'm interested in anything related to digital media art/advertising.

ASU is one of my choices. I will apply to their Intermedia major.

I never heard ASU mentioned here. How is actually the quality of art school here? I heard applying to the art school/intended major is tough. How tough it is?

I like the fact that ASU has "normal" college atmosphere compare to typical art school (small buildings, no housing, no activities, etc). The cost is not as expensive as art school either.

So, is it a good choice esp for my major? I'm also considering UCLA DMA, Otis, SCAD, and Art Center.

ASU has not been mentioned on this particular board, because its art school is not known as one of this university’s strengths. That being said, ASU’s art major is a fairly decent program and is probably no worse than the art program at most public universities. It is definitely not in the same category as UCLA or Art Center. (I personally don’t know much about either Otis or SCAD.) In other words, ASU has a “normal” college atmosphere because it is a “normal” college that happens to have some art majors, but ASU’s program does not have the strong focus and specialized facilities that pure “art schools” would have.

You do understand that you will not be applying directly to the Intermedia major, don’t you? That major is upper division only at ASU. Since you are only a freshman now, you will be applying to ASU as an art exploratory major. You will then have to complete your foundational core and pre-professional requirements, and undergo a portfolio review, before being admitted into the major as a junior. Spaces in the program are limited, so yes, it is very competitive (i.e., “tough” to get into).

Hey ebissu. I am applying for design this year, and I had heard pretty good things about asu from around. I actually ended up visiting the campus. I was pretty disappointed, and there wasn’t anything I saw that proved to me it was a good artistic school. University of Texas is supposed to be a good public university. Pratt Institute might be worth applying to. It’s private, but if your grades are decent, they are pretty generous with financial aid I hear.

I would rank Texas’s art program about the same or perhaps a little lower than ASU’s. Just like ASU, Texas is a a big State school that offers just about every major but is not particularly known for its visual art programs.

Also, Texas does not offer anything like the concentration in intermedia that ASU has. In fact, Texas has rather limited digital media offerings.
