Armed Robbery Off Campus

Checked my son's Tulane email and there's a message in there about an armed robbery on the "1000 block of Broadway Street".

Have no idea how close that is to school, but check it out.

Here are two articles about the robbery. [Tulane Police investigating off-campus armed robbery | NOLA.com](http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2013/07/tulane_police_investingating_o.html)

The Mushroom is the store right above The Boot.

You can get the same emails and crime reports if you sign up with TUPD. [Tulane University - Sign Up for crime alerts and Wave Patrol newsletter](http://tulane.edu/police/newsletters/subscribe.cfm)

I also subscribe to [SpotCrime Crime Map](http://spotcrime.com/) You can put in the address of Bruff (35 McAlsiter Drive 70118) and a radius (I use 2 miles) and you will get daily reports of crimes in the area. The vast majority I have seen are in the Holly Grove neighborhood, not an area that really affects the kids.

I just remind my D a couple times a year to be very aware of her surroundings and if there is any doubt in her mind to get somewhere public and ask TUPD for an escort. She has never had to do that. I think the trick for us parents is to find that narrow balance between not being crazy about the situation, but not being oblivious either. Knock on wood, there have been very few incidents overall for the last number of years, and I cannot remember one off hand where anyone was hurt. Obviously the number of incidents will never be zero, at any school.

I agree, FC. It’s just important to be aware (for both students and parents). The tricky thing about Tulane is that although it’s in a city, it’s not ‘downtown’ (like NYU, for example) but sitting in a rather bucolic area. I think that can lead to complacency about safety.

FWIW, I put in my older s’s zip code (in a city on the west coast) in that crime alert link and there were about as many thefts (but not armed robberies) as in the NOLA campus area

Just adding to the conversation since I was just down there visiting my son in summer school: the area is pretty dead right now compared to the usual level of activity and I think that probably increases the likelihood of such occurrences. It’s hard to imagine that happening on a typical night when campus and the surrounding areas are fully occupied. If you read the article, the previous time the Mushroom was robbed occurred in June. I know things do happen on occasion, but I think the area is particularly vulnerable when relatively unoccupied.

True dat, kreative.

Another I’m using, found on the City of New Orleans site, crimemapping.com offers email updates (using a 2 mile radius like FC suggested) and has a great mobile app. You can filter by dates and crimes. Another site I had found had year old events still on their map. Best feature is the data is extracted from the NOPD’s record system and current.
