Our 16 y/o son is interested in WP and is also looking into ROTC scholarships. I keep finding on the websites that you must major in an "accepted academic major" (or maybe it's "approved"...can't remember). Anyway, I can't find a list anywhere of these majors. Does anyone have any ideas? For what it's worth, he'd like to go to USC and major in film production. I have some concerns that this won't be on the accepted list!

The selected major one declares depends on the tier of scholarship that is offered.
If you are offered a Tier 1 scholarship, you must declare a specific engineering major (computer, electrical or environmental). A Tier 2 scholarship must be aeronautical, aerospace, mechanical, astronautical engineering or meteorology/atmospheric sciences. A Tier 3 technical scholarship can select from architechture, chemistry, computer science, architechtural engineering, mathematics, operations research or physics.
A Tier 4 is non technical

Could Tier 4 be any non-tech major? How did you find this out? I looked online everywhere! Is it in the printed info they send you?

I have a son attending college on an AFROTC scholarship, but I know each service is different. In the Air Force, I believe it's Tier 1 that is non-tech and that is what our son got. However, his major is International Studies and I think that was probably a major that would look a lot better than film studies.

The information I provided is on the Air Force indorsement my son signed and returned to AFROTC. I now realize your original question in on the ArmyROTC scholarship thread. This may not be the case with Army ROTC. Within the Teir 4 NONTECHNICAL listings, there are only three sub headings. One is "Foreign Language", the second is "Foreign Area Studies" and the last is "Any Degree". On the letter my son recieved from AFROTC, it states that his

academic major choice, and the number of scholarships available in
each academic major".

In my son's case, he indicated on his original application that he wanted pre-med. His choice of major was also mentioned during the interview process.

I know of a student that accepted a 4 year AFROTC scholarship in mechanical engineering and has since changed his major. His decision voided the scholarship but he reapplied for a new AFROTC scholarship in his new major.

You should contact the ROTC office at the college where your child's major is offered. They would have a better idea if your son's major has ever selected for a scholarship.
