Does anyone know whether Biochemistry would be considered a "technical" major, for the purposes of an AFROTC scholarship? He is also planning at least a minor in Spanish.

Look here: [U.S. Air Force ROTC - Scholarships - High School Scholarships - Schools & Majors](Highly Desired Majors | U.S. Air Force ROTC)

Chemistry is listed, but not Biology. The list of majors they want may change each year.

Twenty years ago when I was in AFROTC, they only cared that you studied your approved major. Most scholarship students had double or triple majors so that we could also study what we wanted.

I would assume that there would be considerable overlap between Chemistry and Biochemistry so that if you are approved in the former, you could easily fit in the latter.

However, I know they have changed the program in many ways since I was in school. Check the website as suggested by whydoicare.

Thanks!

I’m thinking that the list on the AFROTC site must not be completely inflexible and must allow for some discretion… For instance, the officer we spoke to at one Detachment said that Spanish would fulfill the language requirement, and it’s not listed.

It has sure changed in the last 20 years. My husband describes basically “falling into” an AFROTC full 4 yr scholarship (Type I today). He was an Electrical Engineering major, but didn’t have the sky high GPA and stellar test scores that seem to be required for an AFROTC scholarship now!
