Arrested

Earlier this week I was arrested for possession of weed (yeah, stupid especially because I was on vacation). I know this will kill my chances of getting into any good college, but will this ruin my chances even for state schools? Your thoughts? I'm going to be a senior.

Are you a juvenile?
Will this arrest lead to a conviction, or is there some type of diversion program available to you?

Well, I’m only a senior myself, so it’s not like I’m an expert or anything, but it seems that you might be able to mitigate things by applying to colleges with a KNOWN hippy-ish stance who might not care quite as much about something as minor as weed. (I have never done drugs, but I guess weed is considered minor… lol.)

For example, Bob Jones University would probably want to lynch you if you had weed on their campus. Warren Wilson College? Uh… not so sure. The less politically conservative a college is, I think the less-likely it is to really care about something like that.

Also, you can use it as a “life lesson” example in your essays. No matter how much you think doing pot is fine, you can lie in your essays and say, “My greatest regret is doing drugs… blah blah… I’ve learned a lot… blah blah blah…”

you really need to look into this, because it might prohibit you from getting financial aid. You need to find out if you can instead be diverted into a 1st offenders or rehab or something, so that you don’t get a conviction on your record.

It might be worth having your parents invest in a lawyer given the potential impact, or if you are lower income look into what lower-cost or free resources might be available to you.

If you’re competent, I suggest Brown. Very well known hippy culture. The adcoms are quite the hippies too. They’d welcome another.

State schools are desperate for competency, so the weed may be negligible.

However if you’re incompetent, then community college it is.

If you’re dumb… well, McDonald’s custodian it is. That may be a bit hyperbolic…

Uvm…

Well a senior from my school last got arrested for the same thing and still went to Michigan

Not a lawyer here but you need a good one to make sure whatever punishment recorded is not something you need to report to colleges. He/she may have to look at the exact wording of the federal aid guidelines and common application to see what flexibility you have with a plea bargain.

Yes, go to court and do whatever they tell you to (probably probation and comm service). Most likely, they will scrub the charge from your record if it is a first time offense. I know a girl who got like 3 misdemeanors in her junior year but still made it into HYPSM. Good luck!

I think you will generally be alright. Like someone said before, politically liberal schools and state schools may not care as much. For example, just look up Colorado Boulder’s 4/20 celebrations. However, it seems like people here are automatically associating smoking weed with being a hippie/hipster. If you aren’t that type of person, you’ve still got a great amount of state schools and moderate private schools to look at.

Thanks for all the support guys. I don’t know if I can get the charges off of my record yet, so I’ll have to see what happens.

Gotta love out countries crazy drug laws!
