Arrr I'm hungry for info about UNC and (especially) Davidson

Anything you have to tell me, I definitely want to hear.

(I looked at the threads for both of these schools but I need more info!)

Acceptance rates for NC students? Reputations? Postives? Negatives? Social scene? Number to go onto grad studies? Good at polysci/international relations? Conservative/religous atmosphere? Does Davidson deserve the rep for extremely challenging courses? What about the cities they're located in?

Heeee. I've been doing a bunch of research lately and I want to know everything I can before I apply (even before I visit..)

positives - davidson - they have laundry service for everyone living in dorms.

I would do anything to have laundry service.

mwellington13, do you live in NC? If so you could probably somewhat figure out from your own high school the acceptance rate at UNC-Chapel Hill (or just search for it on their website).
Davidson is in a very small town with busy suburbs just a few miles away (like less than 5 miles). Charlotte is just about 10 miles (or so depending on where you want to go)away. So the big city is close by if you have a car.
Davidson student body is less than 2000 and the majority are white and fairly conservative. I have heard that many come from private high schools (don't know this for fact). They give out 10 Belk scholarships (full ride) per year to incoming freshmen. I think many go on to grad. school. Have heard that med. school acceptance rate is high. Apparantly the rep for challenging coursework is true. Fraternities are big for the guys while girls have "eating houses" instead of sororities. There is a lot of school spirit for athletics. Most kids in my area don't consider Davidson because : it's too close to home, too hard to get into, and too expensive...any one or all of the above reasons apply. It is a very pretty campus in a nice setting and known as a school for smart kids.

Davidson also has a strong poli sci/IR program. The impression my daughter got was that Davidson tries to reduce trivial problems to keep students focused on learning. For example, they have an outstanding track record in pairing roommates, so there are few roommate problems.

Chapel Hill is a better college town than Davidson or Charlotte, in my opinion. Davidson is nice, but there's not too much going on. You need a car to get to Charlotte, and I would definitely not consider Charlotte a college town.

UNC and Davidson attract different students. Like packmom said, my school did not send many to Davidson (only 2), but UNC is always a huge favorite. Chapel Hill is large enough to have all sorts of students, who can and do mix freely. Davidson is much more homogeneous, but it definitely doesn't have the conservative or religious fervor it used to. Fraternities are still quite popular, and drinking is still a large problem, but the Honor Code is taken VERY seriously at Davidson. Final exams can be taken outside of class, from what I've heard- students are trusted to go by the honor code and not cheat. The campuses are actually fairly similar; both have classic brick architecture and superb landscaping. Athletics is probably the biggest extracurricular activity at Davidson, but I'd say music and community service are pretty popular too. UNC has an excellent reputation, which it justly deserves. Intro classes can be big, but most intermediate or advanced classes are fairly small (20-50 students). Davidson probably gets the edge in grad school admissions (definitely in the sciences), but UNC does quite well in sending students to graduate or professional school (or winning prestigious scholarships like the Rhodes). The main difference, I suppose, is size. UNC is much, much bigger than Davidson, which makes a huge difference in your experience. UNC is a large research university with a highlands research station, marine lab, ties with Duke and NC State, etc. Davidson is a small, friendly LAC with lots of money to spend on undergraduates. Visiting both, you'll probably like one better than the other.
