Alright I already posted something similar to this on another part of this site. (so dont get mad) But I am still having trouble deciding between UNCG and UNC. I am from an extremely small town in NC, like only 15,000, so my family amd friends think that I would be more comfortable goin to UNCG( with the size, closeness to home, plus I know a lot of ppl goin..... only problem with UNCG is its a suitcase college :-/) However, lets face it UNC is a great school and well known for it. What I am really tryin to figure out, rankings aside and all, is that will a small town girl, like myself fit in down at UNC. A lot of kids from my town have passed up UNC, sayin that the people down there are really stuck up and uppity (like those rich prada, louis vuitton kids :-p) Basically nothing like the down to earth people I'm use to being around. No offense to anyone who goes there, but this is just what I heard... Last week I decided that I would give UNC a try (i could always transfer next year if i hated it) but everyone keeps telling me that I'm not gonna fit in and I'm gonna be miserable the first year and I really dont wont that. I want to enjoy every bit of college to it's fullest. So if someone could tell me there thoughts on UNC and UNCG please help.

oh and if my career goals need to be factored in, I plan on doing something in the medical field as of now (dermatologist-long shot dream; nurse anthetist; physicians assistant; or sports trainer) and if I go and decided I hate science related fields my back up is business type (business advertisment or real estate).

Again please help, my family is making me decide by the end of the week!
I'm suppose to go to this UNC overnight thing on Friday but I dont think I'll be able to attend, so this is really goin to help me out a lot.

definitely go to UNC.

OK....no question you should go to UNC. It is not that far from UNCG and it is a MUCH better college, not that UNCG isnt a good school. UNC you will have a lot more fun there.

As a current UNC student, I can say that most of the people I have met here are extremely friendly and welcoming, regardless of your origins. I know the size can seem extremely intimidating. Even coming from a fairly large town, going to a school with 15,000 undergrads was pretty scary for me. But please trust me when I say that it starts to feel small very very soon. Even with a large campus and so many students, I see people I know everywhere I go. You meet people from the moment you step on campus at orientation, on your hall, at summer reading, in classes, in clubs, etc. And the people I know here couldn't care less about social standing or what clothes you wear (since it is a big school, there are probably people who do care, but I don't choose to spend any time with them, because there are lots of people who are very open and friendly to everyone). I personally wouldn't know a Prada bag from one bought from a discount store (it helps I'm a guy, I suppose)...but it's still not a big thing for any of the people I know.

Several of my friends are from small towns in NC and they have fit in extremely well. Next year's student body president is from a very small town as well. I think the welcoming feel of Carolina makes this school a wonderful place to call home, and I hope you will be joining the Carolina Family next year.

Thanks yall, I'm feelin a little bit better on going to Carolina (the size is still scaring me a little, but I reckon I can get over that pretty quickly with nice people around)

Cotarheel, I hope the people are as nice as you say they are :)

Haha well if you can't find anyone else, I promise I will stand alone in being nice to you :)

"my family amd friends think that I would be more comfortable goin to UNCG( with the size, closeness to home, plus I know a lot of ppl goin....."

do not go to UNCG. I went to Kansas University because it was close to home and I knew a lot of people that were also going. this is a cop out. I don't feel like I'm growing as a person and everything is just way too familiar... Granted everyone is different, keep in mind that college is about being in a totally new environment and growing socially as well as academically.

soccergurl03 you should listen to that kelly clarkson breakaway song!

yeah, i probably wont grow one bit goin to uncg now that i think about it. I just talked to one of my friends and I am now fully convinced that I'm better off tryin Carolina for a semester or a year and stayin as far away from greensboro as possible.

haha lovelight15, i love that song.

well thank goodness! don't you dare change your mind and go to uncg :D

good plan, soccergurl! Family and home are soooo important--for sure. I think most people just sever the roots they put down. It seems like trying it out seems like a good solution.
