Does anyone know what percent of art applicants (students applying with full portfolios and as art majors) are usually accepted to UVA?/were accepted this past year?
and about how many applied altogether?

UVa does not accept people specially for an arts program or major. If you submit an arts supplement, it is sent to be evaluated by appropriate faculty in the art, music, or drama department. Their evaluation is included in your admissions file. However, the admissions decision is made by Admissions, not by the arts faculty or the departments, and students are admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences, not to “the art department”.

I know that performance faculty in music have, in the past, given enthusiastic recommendations to people who were not eventually admitted, I gather because they did not meet UVA’s academic requirements. Since most of any student’s time is going to be spent outside his or her major, s/he simply has to be able to compete academically. Occasionally one of the arts departments has been able to lobby to get somebody especially desirable, from their point of view, off the waitlist.

In short, UVA operates like a college, not like a conservatory or arts school. A favorable recommendation from the arts faculty might be a “tip factor” but it’s not going to make up for deficiencies elsewhere in the application.

Dean J, correct me if I’m wrong.

I think Jingle just about covered it. :)

It may help to remember that, generally, arts students apply to the College of Arts & Sciences. They are not applying directly to an arts major. You’ll declare your major once you are enrolled.

Okay, I understand. Thanks so much for your insight!
