Art Dept.

Anyone familiar with the art dept at Hamilton?? We visited and the teachers seemed great , but the facility wasn't so great. Didn't see any student studios. Any input would be welcome. Decision crunch time is here!!

Hi -

I haven't been on the Hill in a while but I do remember seeing this article regarding a new arts complex:

<a href="http://www.hamilton.edu/news/more_news/display.cfm?id=11660%5B/url%5D">http://www.hamilton.edu/news/more_news/display.cfm?id=11660</a></p>

Sounds like a brand new facility is on the way!

I'm an alum - loved it and highly recommend it, by the way.

thanks...saw this article and asked the art dept chair about it. I guess it will be great, but won't be completed until after '11 when D graduates!! Great for the future of Hamilton though!

We actually toured the campus today and specifically the Arts Dept. We had to do this on our own because it isn't on a scheduled tour. We found the technical director for the art department and he showed us around. It was a maze but seemed to have lots of areas of interest. Only about 15 majors and I think there were 5 profs (not positive) Apparently, ceramics was big but the professor retired and they have been through several to find a replacement. There were huge kilns that were no longer in use because the field of study had lost its leader, but available if needed. The capacity to make one's own glaze is there but idle. The classes that seemed active this semester included drawing, sculpture, "organic" sculpture and some form of computer graphics. The capacity for metal work, wood work, lithographs/print making, photography was apparent.

I guess to sum up, it seemed like the potential was there for lots of varied exposure to mediums but underused. The one major we met was enjoying her space and projects.
