Art Focused Schools with Rolling Admissions?

Is anyone aware of arts focused school with rolling admissions. I'm slightly picky as of recently, but I've been doing the research on other schools for about a year now. Things came up at home and I wasn't able to apply any where. I'd perfer good academics along with it too. I'm currently looking into Walnut Hill but I need some more options.

If you need financial aid, you won't have much luck applying late this year -- most schools will have exhausted their FA budgets during the regular admission programs.

If you are a full pay student, you will have lots of options. I suggest you check out these schools: Interlochen, Idyllwild and Putney.

You don't say what type of art -- or what type of student you are and how much you want the art to be part of your schooling. Many, many boarding schools have excellent art departments and do a great job of offering advanced opportunities to artists while maintaining a balanced education. Check out Fountain Valley School, Northfield Mount Hermon and Thacher (those are just schools I know personally -- there are many others that have excellent arts departments).

I think you will find that most schools (maybe not the top 10) will accept rolling admissions applications from full pay students.

I just read you other post about whether boarding school is right for you -- based on what you posted there, I would take Putney off the list (too loose, not structured enough for you) and place Northfield Mount Hermon on the top of the list.

My youngest son attends NMH -- excellent art department and very structured, fantastic support systems (for everyone -- not just certain kids). My son has organizational issues (doesn't every adolescent boy?) and he meets with his advisor once a week and with a learning skills person twice a week. Also -- NMH has a block schedule, only 3-4 classes per semester, so you can focus on fewer classes at a time.

I am FA student, and needing as much financial aid as completely possible. (Average income is, if I'm not mistaken $25,000 a year. Single mother who works at a grocery store.)

I'm either longing to apply in a school with a writing or music program. I'm a tuba player, just for a bit more info. (Yes, a 5'3" female tubist. :))

Is NMH rolling, or will it hurt me due to the fact I'm so in need of FA?

Unfortunately, your odds for gaining admission and financial aid for the 09-10 school year are pretty much zero. Even schools with rolling admission had financial aid deadlines that have passed. After the financial aid deadlines, the FA budget is divided up between current students and students offered admission. If a student is awarded FA and declines the acceptance, that FA is usually offered to a student on the waitlist. It is very unusual for a school to have money available for late enrolling students -- and with current economic conditions, I think it will be even more unusual.

NMH does have both a financial aid and an admissions deadline -- both which have past. They offer rolling admissions after their admissions deadline, but only for open spots (they may have room for 4 more sophomore boys but no room for sophomore girls, etc) and I don't believe that they have FA available -- but it is worth calling and asking them.

It doesn't hurt to apply -- but with the level of need you have and the late date, I think you need to make plans that don't involve boarding school.

I guess as much. It was worth a hope though I guess.

What about schools that have offered no priority deadlines or dates for submission (as Walnut Hill)?

I would suggest that you call Walnut Hill and ask them some specific questions regarding financial aid if you haven't yet applied -- if they award FA based on a rolling admission process, they may have allocated most of their budget already, but you don't know. Again -- it is worth a call.

Something else I should mention: FA is generally awarded to top students that the school is trying to attract, not someone who would fall in the "middle of the pack". You need to be able to offer the school something -- fantastic tuba playing, great grades/test scores/ athletics, etc. If you are just an "ok" tuba player and the rest of your stats are just average, you will have a very difficult time.

I think I have a strong chance at the merit options. Or, at least I'm hoping I am. Everything seems to be relative lately for me. :)

Then I would suggest you contact Walnut Hill today -- and I would also suggest you contact NMH and Interlochen and discuss FA possibilities with them.

If it looks like it might be possible -- you need to get your application in ASAP. You aren't the only one who might be looking for rolling admission possibilities, and the FA goes very quickly.

Best of luck!

I checked with Walnut Hill, and they haven't given out much. :) Lucky me.

Now for the rest.

Possibly Pomfret School in CT?

Interlochen offers loads of FA. About 70% of the school are on FA so its worth a try :) Just email and ask. In fact.. one of my friends accidentally missed the FA deadline (Feb 1st) because she forgot to send a few bank statements or so. They still gave her loads of moneeey.

...I am actually in her position now... :/ Heh..

It also depends on your major because I think they divide the financial aid fund between the majors so if there are still places in a certain major there must still be a substantial amount of financial aid available.

Email and ask if there are still places available

Interlochen is a great school!
