art/industrial design major

Would you advise against majoring in art or industrial design while also doing a pre-med track? I know major "doesn't matter," but the majority of medical students seem to be bio majors and whatnot...

Art has been a huge part of me all throughout high school. I've been planning on attending art school but due to costs, I think I'm going to stay in-state and follow a pre-med track.

Thanks!

As far as I know (S. is a Graphic Designer), art is extremely time consuming in college. Expect to spend 40+hrs / week in studio alone. I am not sure if it is going to work. But some people work faster…
From more recent experience, pre-med D. wanted to take some art-related class and ended up taking paper making despite of my warning that it will be very time consuming. She admitted that it was and never took any other art at college. However, she graduted with Music Minor, currently at Med. School.
Try and see, you can always change major or change your plans to go to Med. School as most pre-meds do.

My sister’s studying architectural design, and holy moly she spends a TON of time in studio. I can’t imagine combining her major’s time demands with premed courses–youch. Another thing to look into is how much flexibility you’ll have with your schedule should you choose art–I know for art programs here, they’re just that…programs. Other majors have considerable freedom–“Take 2 physics classes before you graduate”–but art programs here require you to take certain classes each semester, leaving very little wiggle room for adding premed prereqs and a huge conundrum if classes conflict.

Keep in mind there are other ways to do art than to major in it. Maybe a minor would make more sense. Maybe working for an after school art program for kids would make more sense.
