how much does art portfolio/music tape help you in the application?

you should send an art portfolio/music tape only if your works are of high quality(equivalent or exceeding college level). many schools ask that applicants refrain from sending extra materials unless it is very very good.

sometimes a mediocre supplementary material will actually work against you, and not for you.

i found this on a college site:
"We know that applicants want to distinguish themselves as much as possible in the application process, and that for some, that means being able to submit supplementary materials such as poetry, or videos, or novels, or photocopies of awards and programs, and the like.

We ask, however, that you please resist the impulse to send us extra items. Additional materials (except in the case of home-schooled students submitting curricular materials and portfolios) will not be evaluated and will not be returned."

"You are expected to have previously received significant recognition for your talent, usually at the regional, state, national or international level."

most applicants are admitted without sending extra work. so you should think carefully before sending any supp. materials in.
