In the coming weeks I will be applying to NYU, BC, Harvard, Penn, Columbia, and BU. The main focus of my essay is playing and recording original music in my home studio, and I noted this as one of my most important extra curricular activities. Would it be in my best interest to send a sample of my recorded material, or would it be seen as unnecessary. I play pop/rock type material, which makes me think twice about sending it. If I should send it, how many songs would be appropriate?

If you send do 5-7 songs that shows depth (diffierent styles). Note that some colleges have profs go over the material and rate it. Send your best.

It can't hurt to send in a CD. The Common App Arts Supplement suggests 10 minutes of material showing contrasting examples of your work.
