Art Portfolio Question

Hi! I'm applying to CMU's School of Art for Regular Decision.

On Slideroom, for each piece that you upload, it gives you space to add "additional details", with 1000 characters worth of room. I've included the obvious (date, size, medium) but I'm wondering if Carnegie Mellon expects, or would like it if I included more details (such as concepts or intent). I understand that if one attends the In-Person Portfolio Review, they are asked questions about their art, but as someone who is unable to attend on of those sessions, I'd like to know if we are still expected to sort of "talk about" our art through Slideroom.

Thank so much!

I would say you should use the additional details to talk about the concept, intent, and what the piece means to you as well as the background. For my application, depending on what the image was, I wrote pretty lengthy responses. However, I think I may have gone a little overboard. I gave detailed descriptions on process, content, concept, and so on for the pieces that mattered the most to me and for the others just basic information as you’ve already done. I was accepted ED and I think the descriptions might be pretty helpful if your artwork is concept heavy.
