My DD wants to double major in Engineering and Studio Art. One school she's looking at is University of Alabama, because they have indicated that they would work with her to do just that. Does anyone have an opinion regarding their 2-D Art Program?

If you post this on the UA section you will get a response. That board is very active.

My son is currently doing that combination at UA. While it is very possible, at least at this point there is little or no coordination between the two colleges. Both colleges are very aware of what it takes to earn their major, and both his advisors are enthused at the combination, but noone seems to be able to really confirm how the two degrees coordinate, so we try to parse what is written in the course catalog and hope for the best.
He has really enjoyed the 2D art program, he is learning, and as an addition to his other degree it seems sufficient. Having earned a BFA back in the day however, I would say that if art was his only major I would not have sent him to UA.
All said - he loves UA - Roll Tide!

I love CC. Can i ask where you would send him if not UA for art? My son was jsut accepted at UA and he wil be attending next year on the Pres scholarship (acctg) we are thrilled. My D is a sophomore in HS, and to me would not be the UA profile (she is not a sorority girl), she loves art and is quite talented, and bright too, loves poltics and history. In our discussions over these last few weeks I had brought up wouldn’t it be cool for them both to go to the same school, but son said with it being so big they likley would barely see each other (sad)… but is making me start to think for her (wish we done this in sophmore year for son, but maybe he wouldn’t have ended up at bama, which we are really quite happy with)…

So many schools well known for their art programs. For public, you can’t go wrong with the #1 ranked public art school, VCU. Otherwise there are literally hundreds of places if you’re just going straight art. With such a competitive field with brilliant artists often making a barely-living wage, IMHO you have to give them the best possible advantage.
Combined with his other major though - it makes sense, and there are some real gems as far as teachers in the dept.

^^ I had the same though as far as our younger son attending Bama - we would just love it but have to be realistic and not put him somewhere which may not be the place for his major just for the sake of the connection and $$.

D loves art but realizes she will need a career too, so she will double major - but really not sure what yet…but she belongs in a school where she will be really immersed in art and stimulated at same time. I look forward to helping her find her place, just like Bama will be for son!!!
