OP sis, if you could stretch legs, try stopping by at Syracuse. It is kind of pain to go there if you are from outside.
Far as I know, either kid would be impressed and fell in love it or plain hate it just by walking around. I never made it there despite being in-state, not being that interested in giant Unis and cold snowy winter.
Its art programs are generally loved in this forum, lots of choices (maybe too many) bit stingy side money unless you are low income or URM.
Then you’d out to see RIT, then you are too spread out. upper NY state is this big, unmanageable place come to think of it.
good luck!

bearanddogs: I totally know what you mean about momentum. I definitely hope he’s able to keep it up!!!

And thanks for the NPD link!!! I’ll do a forum search for more info on preparation… also I imagine his art teacher can help a lot with that. He’ll DEFINITELY check it out. Luckily all games fall on Fridays this year.

I have a friend who goes to the Art Academy in Cincinnati… he may have transferred though? I’ll ask him about it.

taxguy: Thanks for the info on the Tyler School, I’ll do some further investigation on that. Maybe call or shoot an email. The other suggestions look pretty good, except California is too far away for my mother and I could not see my brother in the city (being nyc) - nor could he really picture himself there… at least not at this point.

Thanks again for all your help! My brother and I are truly grateful for the advice as it seems there are far too few platforms for art program/school searches on the internet.

I just finished an extensive message that would have given great insight! But, it was accidently deleted…
Anyways, OP, it seems like your brother and I have a lot in common. We both live in OH, want to studio CA, and are somewhat prohibited from leaving the state, although it seems like your bro might have more leniency when it comes to going away.
Okay, I’ve only really looked into ART SCHOOLS for Computer Animation, because honestly, wouldn’t it be better to be surrounded by other types of artists while studying art?
Art schools that I know of that offer some form of animation that looks somewhat decent:
Ringling College of Art and Design - FLA
Savannah College of Art and Design
School of Museum of Fine Arts - Boston
Rhode Island School of Design
School of Visual Arts - NY
Academy of Art University - San Francisco
University of the Arts - Philadelphia
California College of the Arts
Full Sail - FLA
Art Center College of design - CA
The Art Institutes
Columbus College of Art and Design
Cleveland Institute of Art
Parsons The New School for Design - NY
Maryland Institute College of Art
Pratt Institute
Massachusetts College of Art and Design

Now, I’m not saying that all of these are the ones that I would recommend because A) I haven’t attended any of them and 1) these are ones I’ve only heard of and some don’t interest me at all. However, I will say that I have heard positive reviews for Ringling, SCAD, RISD, Pratt, CalArts, and Art Center. But, I wouldn’t eliminate any yet. In general, though, I’ve heard negative reviews for the AIs, and lots of people say to avoid AAU, and if deciding to choose between RCAD and SCAD, go with RCAD if you can.
As far as state schools go…I almost chose to go to Kent; they do have an excuse for an animation program there. But, I decided to forgo a 4 yr school for now, and instead opted for community college. Woohoo for Tri C!
If your brother can’t decide where to go yet, I do recommend he go to cc while he decides. He can take some art classes to help him develop his skills, like me.
If this helps, coming from an aspiring Computer animator also in OH looking for a place to study, I have my eyes set on Ringling, SVA, or Full Sail…with my heart completely on Ringling…who knows, in two years I might actually be able to call myself a RCAD student!
Just be aware, as OH residents, there isn’t an abundance of places for us to study art and even less for CA…out of state may be one of his few options if he plans to study at an art school with some hint of a respected reputation.
Hope this didn’t seem like a giant ramble!

marieblue, thanks for the suggestions! I’ve actually suggested going the “community college then transfer” route to him, but he doesn’t seem to keen on it… but who knows. Our dad teaches at Kent State though, so if all fails and he somehow gets rejected by all the schools he applies to (unlikely), there’s always Kent - for free! Also, I heard Kent is in the process of developing their animation program and possibly creating a gaming major as well … or maybe developing that into its animation program? I’m not completely sure.

Haha, that’s funny because my brother also had his heart set on Ringling, but he’s seemed to have somehow lost confidence in himself… I keep telling him, if you don’t believe you can do it, then why would anyone else believe in you! But he’s still going to apply.

As for OH art schools, there’s CCAD and CIA… granted CIA is a little pricey, but still. I know a few students at CCAD who absolutely love it.

CCAD and CIA are both great schools. I attended CCAD some years back, my wifes a graduate, and I know tons of alumni. They may not figure at the front of most “top art school” lists, but they both have solid programs in a number of fields. I can’t really recommend Art Academy of Cincinnati. It’s biggest positive is that its a bit cheaper than other schools, but from the few people I know who have gone, I havent heard great things. It’s in a rough part of Cinci too, though its getting better.
