Art School admission 2018

@askexperts I was just reviewing this thread to see if I missed anything and saw your question about the students review website. I just checked it out…wow, there’s a lot of negativity there. If you believe everything on that site you’d never send your child anywhere. I’ll have to side with @NYCMomof3 and @ArtAngst and trust that most of it is sour grapes. Those with positive experiences often don’t go looking to document them, unfortunately. The complainers are much louder.

Anyhoo…back to my original reason I was reviewing the thread…my D applied to Pratt early action and I was wondering if anyone else was in the same boat and may have heard anything?

I would ordinarily not be so antsy, but I seem to have spent too much time on the musical theatre threads. I’m gearing up for artsy D’s younger sister’s application season next year. I’m glad I had the portfolio component this year to break me in for non-traditional college apps, but MT is another beast entirely. Sheesh.

NYart15–student review sites are all over the place. After a few years looking at them…

  1. The student who got surprised at the work load from an art school. Thought it would be easy. (A lot of students think of “art school” as easy. It’s really a ton of work and time consuming. Gotta love it.)
  2. The student who didn’t understand how expensive art school was and had to drop out due to finances. Felt cheated. Or didn’t drop out soon enough and saddled with thousands in loans.
  3. The student who loves every minute and excels.

@NYart15 oooh I sympathize with you…my two are all art school applications BUT they were tech crew heads of their high school’s very intense theater & musicals program…so we know what THOSE kids are like too. ;D

@NYart15 My daughters are 4 years apart. The first applied to MT, but also submitted an art portfolio as a supplement. Younger D, also a singer/ actor/ artist decided on studio art but produced a voice CD as a supplement. She would have applied for Skidmore’s Filene’s music scholarship if she hadn’t been accepted to NYU ED for studio art. So I feel your pain.

Younger D was accepted to Pratt EA. She received her acceptance and scholarship info by about December 22.

Good luck to your D’s. This is my 10th consecutive year with a D at NYU! Both did undergraduate and graduate work there. Only one more year until my oldest gets her masters degree

@gouf78 @ArtAngst @uskoolfish

Love this thread…thank YOU!!!

RISD ED results are out.

@NYart15 I agree. When I read the comments on that website, I looked for commonalities among the issues and see they are important issues to my son. In fact, I did learn something new about the school on that website. The bottom line is we need to do some research on our own. :slight_smile:

Thanks @pastelrain
My D will apply to RISD regular decision so I’m sure we’ll be waiting on that decision for awhile.

Yeah I’m applying RD too, I was originally applying ED but decided against it for financial reasons.

Good plan @pastelrain
Best of luck!
We’ll compare notes this spring!!

Fortunately, my son got accepted to LCAD, SCAD and MCAD. Still waiting for SVA and CalArts.
No scholarship info from SCAD yet.

I started reading this forum a year ago. Your opinion and experience certainty helps us a lot. Thank you so much. Very appreciated.

Good luck to all of us!

@AskExperts How long did it take for you to hear from SCAD?

@ready2launch Very fast. For the acceptance, less than 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your advice, insight, encouragement and good humor! As if 12am my son has been accepted ED to Carnegie Mellon School of Art!!!

@itsreallymia Congrats to your son! Would you be able to share his stats and other related components to his application? Also was an interview required? Thanks.

@cag60093

Summary thrown together:

3.5 UW GPA
1240 SAT

Only honors courses have been art related and taken this year.
Fluid in French (writing and speaking)
Lead in Theater productions (plays and musicals) all 3 yrs at boarding school.
Volunteers as computer tech in schools computer lab at least 3 times per week.
Recommendations excellent
From Harlem, NY. attended private NYC (k-9) then boarding school “upstate NY”.
Captain of Varsity Track Team
Member of ACapella Group
Works as Pallbearer for grieving families part time.
Attended Pre-College Game Academy and led team producing a game he conceived. From sketch to 2D to final product. He was actively involved while on campus.
I believe his essays were great mostly because it was blunt and in his own voice.
Hometown Interview with AO went extremely well. He offered to fly him in for his portfolio review which made him getting there much easier for us.
Portfolio review was very short and he was nervous coming out because he couldn’t get a read on how they felt about it. He had just done his Tyler review where she obviously loved his work, talked for an hour and told him that he belonged there. CMU kept it short, dry and professional.
His art really is woven into all aspects of his life and I believe that came through.

First Generation as his father and I didn’t finish college. His big sister is an attorney who graduated from Michigan.

Above everything else, it had to be his portfolio that got him in. IMO

@itsreallymia congrats to you son!!!. Our kids sounds very similar. My daughter went to a private K-8 in NYC then on to boarding school, theater and art. All the best to the rest of his results.

@itsreallymia Thanks for posting his info. He sounds very accomplished. Congrats again.

@NYCMomof3 Sounds like they’ve definitely taken a similar path. He’s overjoyed with CMU as that was is first choice. He’s already been accepted to Tyler at Temple and Michigan State but will be declining those and pulling his other applications.

@cag60093 Thank you
