@JBStillFlying That was the creative scholarship, as DS doesn’t qualify for an academic scholarship (GPA too low).
@sbgal2011 - Ah, OK. Thanks for clarifying!
FYI - in case this makes it doable - there’s probably room for a few thou. more on the creative side, depending on his progress over the next few months and demonstrated interest. Best of luck to him in his college decisions!
My son went to community college first. I actually wanted him to stay at least one more semester to get more gen eds out of the way, but he is DONE with it and wants to move on. He would not have gotten the academic scholarships straight out of high school I don’t think (we homeschooled at the time and he never did take the ACT or SAT), but he did well in CC.
So, just a thought if he still would like to get a scholarship for academics.
@CalGal17 @JBStillFlying There are a few more scholarships he can apply to within SCAD, and some outside of SCAD. We are turning our attention to some four-year colleges to see what they offer in terms of internships and what their job placement statistics are. I know CC is a good option but I’m really not worried about DS being able to do well academically, despite his lower GPA. DS attends a very rigorous, private, college-prep high school that is nicknamed “Harvard High School” because it is so challenging. So I think once he gets to college he will be well-prepared for the Gen Ed classes. It’s just a matter of figuring out what Art program will be best for him. Thanks so much for all of the advice and feedback!
Any idea when ED start coming out? Some schools had a 11/1 ED deadline but the one my daughter applied to had a 11/15 deadline. Do you get an email when decisions are posted or you just have to check daily?
Just an FYI: My son was in the “Game Design” program at his community college, he did take a few gen ed classes, but mostly he took Game Design.
It was in that program that he realized he wants Animation.
So, even if he goes to the CC, it doesn’t mean he necessarily has to take Gen Eds that will be difficult for him.
Last night DS sent his Common App to VCU in an attempt to get into VCU Arts. Hopefully his SAT scores and transcript will be sent next week. How long does it take for VCU to send the link for the Portfolio? Also once they receive everything, how long does it take to hear back from them? DS plans to send his Portfolio during the Christmas break so hoping to hear something by February. Is that realistic?
@sbgal2011 $2500 per quarter? My son also got accepted but have not received the official letter yet.
@AskExperts I wish! It was $2,500 per year, provided he lives on campus. If he lives off campus, it will be reduced to $1,750 per year.
@sbgal2011 My D applied to VCU Arts Nov 15th and sent her portfolio last Wednesday. She got an acceptance letter in the mail today. Was surprisingly quick. The date of the acceptance letter was December 1st.
@ready2launch Wow, that’s a fast turnaround time. DS just submitted Common App on Friday so we are waiting to receive the link t upload his portfolio. As soon as he gets that, he will submit it. Hopefully we will hear from VCU as quickly as you did. Thank you for the information and Congrats to your D!
My daughter applied and sent in her portfolio on Nov 15th and received her acceptance letter yesterday to VCU Arts. We were quite surprised how quick it was. We are from out of state too. It’s her first acceptance.
@DBY2017 Congrats! How long after you submitted your application did it take to receive the link needed to submit the portfolio?
@CalGal17 Congrats to your son’s acceptance to SCAD and for receiving merit money. Could you clarify which merit scholarships if possible? I understand that SCAD offers academic scholarship of up to $12k and achievement scholarship of up to $7.5k, as well as other various scholarship. I understand that these two scholarships are stackable. If your son received the academic scholarship, could you provide his academic stats? My daughter is a HS junior, and I’m trying to gauge what the threshold is to be considered for the academic scholarship?
Also, did you son also receive need aid? If so, does SCAD allow stacking of merit and need aid? I know that most colleges do not. @JBStillFlying, I recall your daughter received merit aid. Could you give your insight and experience?
We will have 2 kids in college when my daughter enters in fall of 2019. My son did not receive any need aid from the schools he applied to because our EFC was on the higher end (not art major). With 2 kids enrolled, I’m hoping our EFC is lowered a bit for my daughter. I have read many posts related to art admission that art colleges are stingy with aid. Is the “aid” in reference to need or merit?
Thanks in advance for your insight.
@cag60093 my D16 did not receive any need-based aid. Her merit aid from SCAD stacked.
I thought she got her portfolio link in 24 hours from what I remember. I can ask her for sure when I get home this evening. We are very excited, however it will come down to financial aid and what we can afford. We are from Ohio and will have to pay OOS tuition. However, my daughter is (I think) not your typical art student- she’s very talented but very high academically so we are hoping for some merit scholarships.
@cag60093, yes the scholarships are stackable, HOWEVER, the website says you can get a minimum of $5,000 for Phi Theta Kappa and he got nothing. That one wasn’t stackable. It is that one OR the merit based. We were disappointed.
He got a merit based scholarship. Then he also got one for his portfolio/resume. Those were stackable.
He got no needs based scholarships. He did qualify for up to a $3,500 loan and we are making him take that per year.
He had a 3.85 GPA from community college. He has never taken the SAT or ACT and they didn’t ask for it since he was a transfer student.
@DBY2017 He got the link yesterday for the portfolio upload. He will upload it today. Hopefully we get a quick response!
Glad he got the link- Good luck! I was mistaken, my daughter applied Nov 11 and we got the letter on Dec 4th. It was a very quick turn around and it surprised us.
@CalGal17 Congrats re: merit based scholarships and it’s great they are stackable. Your son’s financial aid journey is very helpful. Though my D is a HS junior, I want to enter the college app process being fully aware. I hope you will also give updates on his progress at SCAD. Good luck to him!
