Art School admission 2018

@Googie31 so cool to hear of another D pursuing ID. Glad to hear that she loves it. I’m not sure why my D didn’t apply to RIT. I’ll have to ask her.

She heard from MassArt -accepted with $$ but she just told me that her first choice would be UC DAAP. We’re still waiting to hear from them. So nerve wracking!

@IDtoTX

From the first time she stepped on the campus, D knew RIT was the place for her. She felt at home with the nerdiness of the school. She could have been an engineer if she wanted to but has always loved art. She saw ID as a way of combining the two.

We were lucky that D applied to RIT early decision and knew by Thanksgiving that she had been accepted. I’m not sure I could have managed a long wait especially since she not overly excited by her second choice and had nothing else on her list. I can only imagine having too many choices can be as hard on you as not having enough.

@NYCMomof3

Congratulations to your daughter on her acceptances. As mentioned above my D is a third year student at RIT and loves everything about the school - except maybe for the cold weather. I’d be happy to pass along any questions you may have.

Good Luck

@Googie31 and @IDtoTX my daughter had the same exact reaction the day we visited the RIT campus this past August. The school wasn’t a top contender at that point but after meeting with the staff in the animation dept, hearing about the major, the tour, etc, she looked over to me and said, “this is the place for me!” I knew it too…it was exactly what she wanted. She wasn’t too keen on attending an art school. She wanted more academic options and a diversity of majors on campus. Because of their “friendly early decision”, nothing stopped her from applying ED. She found out on 12/15 and holidays have been great.

Googie31, I will definitely message you if I have any questions. Thank you

Anyone here have a kid at Pratt or Drexel doing art? These are my daughter’s top two schools, accepted to both with similar scholarship $, and is very torn between the two - they are very different, but she likes both. She is interested in computer animation. We are revisiting Drexel this weekend, and hope to get back up to Pratt in early spring, but if anyone here has a child at either school, we’d very much like to hear their experiences there - even if they don’t share her intended major.

My son got accepted to SVA with $$. :slight_smile: Now 2 more schools to go, CalArts and Ringling.

@NYCMomof3 that’s so exciting that you think you have a decision! RIT sounds great.
@proserpine wish I could help but congrats to her. She has two great schools to choose from.
@AskExperts awesome! the waiting is tough, isn’t it?

@proserpine congrats on Pratt and Drexel.

@IDtoTX not easy at all! :slight_smile:

@IDtoTX I’m just getting caught up with the thread and saw you were asking about schools with Industrial Design programs. My D1 is a sophomore at RISD. She’s an illustration major but was thinking about possibly switching to ID there so I’m a little familiar with the program and facility as she was researching her options. First off, she had the former department head as a 3D design foundations year prof and loved him and the projects. She’s also a member of the RISD Rover club that’s mostly ID students (they build a prototype Mars rover as part of a national competition) so has worked in the labs and ran tours there over parents weekend. The facilities are amazing there - HUGE studio spaces with every type of machinery imaginable. She also really likes the vibe of the students and facility in that department. In a complimentary way, they are the ‘nerds’ of the art world - the kids who are really adept at combining art, science, tech - basically all things STEAM. And seem less angsty overall compared to the the ‘average’ RISD student. :wink:

After this past fall semester, she realized she really does love illustration but is taking as many electives & winter session classes in ID as she can.

Hope this info helps. If you haven’t had a chance to tour, I’d suggest you do. I’ve toured a bunch of art schools (& work at one too) with both my kids and facilities don’t change too much from school to school, but I found RISD’s ID building & workshops to be impressive.

@ArtAngst - will your daughter need to repeat her 2nd year if she switches her major? I had a niece at RISD who switched from Painting to Textiles and she had to stay an extra year as a result. That was probably 10 years ago.

@BrooklynRye has a daughter at RISD who is majoring in ID, in case anyone is interested. She’s also a 2nd year.

@JBStillFlying it depends alot on when you switch I think but all the major programs begin sophomore year (like most art schools) and yes if she switched sophomore year would probably add a year to stick to their track/requirements (not sure how much it adds after sophomore year). Unofficially she discussed it with some department folks there and since my daughter came in with 3 AP classes they thought she might be able to get it down to just an extra semester, not a full year.

Right now that’s not her plan since she’s seems happier/more settled in Illustration after this past Fall semester. By the end of her junior year she’ll have met most of her requirements so wants to load up on ID for her own interests/sort of like an unofficial minor + she’s taking an ID classes in winter session now too.

@NYCMomof3 That’s amazing she got the Silas Rhodes scholarship! You must be SO PROUD!!! And you’re right and fit and feel… it’s really important! RIT is an awesome program. Super excited for you… but was hoping we’d meet IRL at some point if your daughter ended up at SVA : )

@moonpie I really am proud of her. It would have been nice having her near home but it seems like it won’t happen. I’m still waiting for the financial aid to arrive from SVA…you never know!

I’m sorry, what major did she get into for SVA? Because I applied to Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects and I still have not gotten a response.

@bsue913 she got into the exact major you’ve applied for. We received the response on 12/21. Good luck and I hope you receive your packet soon.

Woo hoo! My D was accepted to DAAP today for ID! We are so excited for her!

@NYCMomof3 that’s awesome about the scholarship for your daughter. I missed that on my earlier reading of the thread.

@bsue913 hope you hear soon!

@IDtoTX congrats on DAAP!!! Especially since it’s her top choice…the acceptance is extra sweet!

@NYCMomof3 thanks! I was sweating it - she wasn’t. :stuck_out_tongue: I haven’t seen her since we found out so it’s killing me.
