@proserpine and @NYCMomof3 Congrats that is wonderful news. It’s great to have choices until you have to make the decision but I know it will all work out.
@proserpine - Pratt’s campus and location are a major selling point! I enjoy every visit to the area. Lots of AirBnB’s, by the way, and many of them cater to Pratt families. While downtown Brooklyn with all its hotels is very nearby and Manhattan, of course, is just a train-ride away, I have found some pretty decent AirBnB fares just a block or two away from the campus. For transportation up and down the Eastern Seaboard, there’s plane, train and bus. We live in MN so she sticks to Delta or Sun Country (JFK) or SW (LaGuardia) to get back and forth. Considering where she lives, we actually don’t spend all that much on transportation costs!
It’s so exciting to read about all of these acceptances! The scholarships seem to be accompanying the acceptance letters for most schools which is very helpful. It will be fun to see where all of our kiddos end up at the end of this process!
Just thought I would pop in and talk a little bit about my daughter’s first semester at Ringling CA program. Overall very thrilled and happy with the program. It was a lot of work, and even though Gouf had warned us her, it was still surprising how much time she spent on her projects. She definitely went through the crisis in confidence when early grades started coming and the art student who was used to getting all As was getting Bs and some Cs. But what she fully recognizes is just how much her art improved in just the first semester. Up until college, she drew what she wanted to, but college has forced her to draw things that she would never have drawn – like cars. One of my happy surprises with Ringling’s program, is that they are not trying to produce staff artists. They are looking to create artists who will be able to conceive stories and characters. Yeah some art is just representations of what is in front of them, but so much of it was, OK, draw what is in front of you, but what is it? What is the story that goes with it. In many cases, they had to tell the story before they started drawing. We knew about the freshman sculpture project that is done second semester, but didn’t realize just how much the “full"artist” concept wound its way through most of her classes. Also very surprised by how much she learned in her film and narrative class (where there was no drawing) and she watched a bunch of oddball films. Again part of the process of creating more than a staff artist. She appreciated all of her teachers. Some were more favored than others, but she felt like she learned from all of them.
We just got the FA packet from RIT…and it looks like she’s done! We don’t have to submit the contract until the end of January and there are two more schools we haven’t heard from but I’m 95% sure it’s a done deal. The other schools would have to offer more for her to change her mind. :D/
@NYCMomof3 Good for you guys!! You must be very relieved.
@NYart15 very! Thank you!
Congrats @NYCMomof3 !!!
@sbgal2011 thank you
Got an acceptance packet from MassArt today. Unfortunately, they weren’t very generous with merit aid and since we’re not in-state or in New England, we’ll probably take that one off the table. We hadn’t visited that one, but it sounded right up my daughter’s alley. Ah, well.
@NYart15 congratulations on the acceptance but I’m not shocked with their lack of generosity. Since they are the only public art school and the tuition is lower, I am expecting them to not be that generous. I guess we will get our packet soon. What other schools are you waiting for? We are waiting on massart and mica
Hi all! I’ve been lurking for a while but thought I would jump in. My D18 wants to go into Industrial Design. She’s really been going back and forth between art school and university for undergraduate. She’s applied to MIAD (accepted with$$), CIA (accepted with $$), Univ of Cincinnati DAAP (still waiting), SCAD (accepted with $$), Auburn (accepted with $), Iowa State (accepted with $$), MassArt (still waiting), RISD (still waiting), Ohio State (still waiting), University of Kansas (accepted with $$), University of Oregon (accepted with $) and University of Houston. Anyone else looking to major in Industrial Design? Anyone else trying to decide between Art School and University? I’ve learned so much from this forum!
Congrats to all the acceptances on this thread. We’ve got some talented kids!
Thanks @NYCMomof3! We’re waiting on MICA as well. Also: Northeastern, Moore, FIT and Brown/RISD (but that one still needs to be submitted).
Welcome @IDtoTX! While my D mainly applied to art schools she likes the perks more available at universities like extracurriculars, study abroad, etc. so she applied to a few of those as well.
Pratt & MICA seem like the art schools with the most extras.
Thanks NYart15. She had almost written off art schools but then realized that CIA has a partnership with Case Western and MIAD has one with Marquette. She could take some classes at those schools.
@IDtoTX yes, CIA was on our radar, but at national portfolio day, the rep pooh-poohed the idea of doing too much at Case Western as she said the workload was too busy at CIA too fit it in so that was discouraging. I’m sure a driven student could make it work though.
Idk re: ID but did you look at Temple/Tyler, GWU/Corcoran or Tufts/SMFA?
@NYart15 thanks. None of the schools that you mentioned offer ID unfortunately. She’s got some tough choices ahead.
Congrats on all the acceptances and scholarships!! So very exciting! My D is home from NYC and her first semester at SVA. She loves it, loves NY and is doing very well! I’m super proud of her, her work is amazing and I cannot believe the things she has done already. She got all A’s and was pretty happy because her animation professor is notoriously hard and “doesn’t give A’s very much” and actually had an A+ in that class! She has really been so independent and made some great friends. Her friends are from across all majors, which is really nice. The only thing I have not been happy with is work study (which was $5000 of her aid package). She has applied for jobs, and all upper classmen have gotten the jobs on campus- which were few and far between. Other jobs were far away (45+subway ride late nights, etc). So hopefully something will pan out this semester, because she needs the money! I wish the process had been a little more clear to us! But, we are VERY happy other than that!
@moonpie I am so happy she is loving SVA and is doing so well! It’s a great school for what she’s studying. My daughter did their computer animation this past summer, loved it so much that she applied. My daughter got in, revceived their Silas Rhodes scholarship but we haven’t heard about any other FA. I am still waiting to hear from the FA office about grants. It would be nice to have something to compare to the RIT award and it would also be great having her study just steps from our home…but I’m not holding my breath lol.
My D is a third year ID student at Rochester Institute of Technology. She absolutely loves it. She pivoted to ID in the middle of her junior year in HS after initially thinking about Graphic Design. She always knew she would not consider an “Art School” as she has varied interests and wanted opportunities that that she did not think an art school could provide (her opinion of art school, not necessarily true). The only other school she applied to was Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Good luck to your daughter.
