Art School admission 2018

@pastelrain @NYart15 the waiting is so anxiety producing! I’m a planner so the unknown is killing me. :slight_smile:

@IDtoTX
You’re definitely in good company here. I’m sure we could all compare college spreadsheets!! It’s been fun for the most part. I’ll miss the research once the decision is made.

We probably won’t know until March or April. I’m growing weary of the process and look forward to finally having a plan in place. I have another DS who went through the college application process last year, so two years in a row of this is a bit daunting. Glad to have a four year break before my next DS starts applying to colleges!

I wish my parents were as involved as you all are with your children’s college search! My parents don’t know anything/are a bit intimidated with the whole art school search…lol. I basically compiled a spreadsheet for them and they kind of go by that, haha. They’re rooting for Ringling and SCAD because they’re a lot closer to home than anywhere else (Texas).

@IDtoTX DS will be attending Carnegie Mellon. It was his first choice so he applied ED and was accepted with great FA. Relieved to have an early end to the process.

@pastelrain this is such a daunting process. I think it’s great that you’ve been so motivated to do all the work.

@itsreallymia2 that’s so fantastic that you guys are done and can just enjoy the rest of Senior year…and plan! I’m jealous. :wink: A daughter of good friends of ours attends Carnegie Mellon and absolutely loves it.

Yep more kudos to @pastelrain - it really is an overwhelming process compared to ‘regular’ admissions, but the fact that you’re doing a lot of it yourself will serve you very well in a career in the creative arts. The more research and involved you can be becomes a great learning experience for when you’re hunting for internships and jobs.

@IDtoTX @ArtAngst Thank you both so much :slight_smile: It means a lot to hear that.

@pastelrain
Ditto to @IDtoTX and @ArtAngst
You’ll be a better person & artist for all the work you’re doing. As much as I like to do the research, I wish my D was more involved or I wish I had given her more to do along the way. Kudos to you.

@pastelrain - can you please come over to our house and help us with our S19’s research! LOL. Would love to have a kid like that. Most at your age don’t understand how much parents appreciate things like a simple worksheet comparing the attributes of the colleges. I just compiled a detailed version for my son (who’s applying to regular college but perhaps music programs as well - he’s not sure yet) to help HIM make the decisions.

Good luck to you and well done - those organization skills will serve you well in a BFA program!

@pastelrain I’m rooting for you and look forward to your pending news on admissions! My D is a HS junior so your journey where you applied and get accepted, etc. and how you manage the whole process is a good model for my D next year. I also think you were the one of the posters that recommended Ringling precollege vs RISD’s bc of the two concentration offering. My D will be attending Ringling’s! Please keep us all posted on your news!

Wow, thank you all so much! I started my research in the beginning of junior year, as soon as I knew that I wanted to go to art school (previously was going to go into law…LOL). My parents are from India so they aren’t very familiar with the American education system, even though I have a brother studying business at WSU. So grateful for them paying for my tuition and their support of me going to art school (though it did take a 6 slide powerpoint presentation to convince them…haha) I wish the best to all of your children, and who knows? They could be my future classmates next year!

@cag60093 Yes! That was me! :slight_smile: Ringling precollege was an amazing experience for me, I hope your D has a lot of fun and makes a lot of new art friends! I learned so much and I still talk to my roommate on Skype at least once a week :slight_smile: I also used a great chunk of my work there for my portfolio.

Wow, what a week. On Friday, my d got rejected from SAIC (her #1 choice, where she did 4 weeks of pre-college last summer, with very good evaluations from her instructors!). Today, she got her acceptance package from MICA, with merit aid and a very encouraging handwritten note from her admissions counselor. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster! How’s everyone else hanging in there?? Anyone else have to deal with a huge (and honestly, somewhat unexpected!) disappointment??

Seconding what the other parents have said, @pastelrain! It’s wonderful to see you taking such control of the process like this. It will definitely serve you well in life. :slight_smile:

@KCHWriter Thank you for the kind words :slight_smile: I’m so sorry your D was rejected from SAIC, but MICA is fantastic! Hopefully the sting of it all passes soon. I have a friend who was recently rejected from SVA (Her top choice after CalArts) and she reached out to them asking for feedback, and they were more than happy to explain their decision. This gave my friend some closure. Would doing something like this help your D?

@KCHWriter I’m sorry to hear about SAIC’s rejection, but glad it was followed up by MICA acceptance with $. When all notices come in, I hope your D will take everything in stride and be satisfied with the school selections she has ahead. Our oldest son went through college apps last year, but not in the arts. He did not get into his tippy top two reach schools; it wasn’t a shock though since we knew going in that acceptance rates at those schools were super low given the competitive process. He didn’t dwell over it and just moved on to other schools that offered acceptances and merit. Things will work out in the end. Good luck!

@pastelrain. My D is so looking forward to Ringling’s precollege. Her two concentrations will be Illustration and Visual Development/Concept Art. Hopefully the latter will complete illustration. While there, did you get an opportunity to learn more in detail about the application process to Ringling? I saw that Ringling Preview Day is 2/17/18 and wonder if we should attend.

@cag60093 I know many people who did Vis Dev/Concept Art and it’s very much a character design/illustration class. Illustration was a wonderful class and I found my love for illustration over animation in it. And yes, we learned a whole lot about the application process! We had required presentations to go to from the admissions counselors where there was a detailed process for each major and we all had the opportunity to ask questions. I would say you don’t need to attend Preview Day as I really felt like I understood the admissions process in and out after precollege. It really helped me cater my portfolio to Ringling’s standards.

@KCHWriter I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter not getting into SAIC. My older DS, who applied to colleges last year, was rejected from his top two choices. We were all surprised that he didn’t get into his first choice, and he was devastated. He ended up at his last choice/safety college. After he attended the orientation in the summer, he felt much better about it. He just completed his first semester and he is flourishing there. These things have a funny way working out, and I’m sure your DD will be happy no matter where she ends up.
