Art School admission 2018

MICA package came in today! Check your mailbox! :slight_smile:

Confirmed with my admissions counselor from MICA that I’ll only hear back early Feb since i was part of Early Action 2. Ahhhhhh the wait continues.

@pastelrain I’m just so impressed with you! (not just your amazing acceptances, but your decision process and approach to everything). My daughter was super involved, But I did the spreadsheet, planned the trips, and she was so grateful for my help. She is at SVA now, and LOVES it! I know you asked earlier about the dorms. They are sure different than the ones at SAIC, SCAD, or PRATT… really any of the other schools we visited. The rooms are tiny, and they are small NYC apartments for the most part. But my daughter loves it there, and really likes having her own kitchen to cook her food instead of having to go to a dining hall to eat a meal plan. Yes, this does take planning and shopping on her part, but she prefers to cook healthy and eat her own food. The city is her “home” and the dorm is more just her bedroom LOL. She lives in the 23rd St. residence hall, which is not the nicest dorm… but the cheapest! Feel free to ask me any questions!

@moonpie wow, thank you so much! I have to say, the dorms at that standpoint sound really nice, I’ve never been a fan of going to a dining hall every day like I had to do at the Ringling precollege (gained three pounds in a month!). What major is your D in? I’m going into illustration next year, so if you know anything about the program and how challenging it is (I really like being challenged with my art, which is why I’m crossing CCA off my list), please let me know.
Also, I’m not the most…outgoing person, in real life I’m quite shy. I don’t know if this is the same for your D, but did she find it easy to make friends?

@KCHWriter I’m sorry to hear about SAIC but I am happy that was followed up by an acceptance at MICA!

@pastelrain sorry you will have to wait a little longer to hear from MICA but I conquer with everyone else…I love how envolved you are with your process. You should be very proud of yourself. It’s an admirable trait to be as responsible as you are at your age.

Well our last school has responded and MICA is a Yes. . One thing I have to say, out of the four schools she applied to, MICA was the only one that included a hand written note from her admissions counselor. Such a lovely and personal touch, I loved reading the compliments and how they found her essay entertaining (which it was thanks to a CC parent who gave my daughter good advice on what could be good to write about). This website has been amazing and I want to thank you all.

All in all, we are at the finish line and have to let RIT know by 2/1. We are still waiting for FA info from two schools. I’ll let you know what we decided when it happens.

I hope that everyone who is still waiting for results all get the results they hoped for.

Next on to my middle daughter’s HS acceptances/declines this February and March (applied to both day and boarding).

I think once this admissions season is over, I will have many cocktails :)) anyone in NYC want to join me? :D/

@NYCMomof3 Thank you for the kind words, and congrats to your daughter on MICA! So glad you guys are nearing the end of this very, very long process. And good luck to your middle daughter with HS admissions…I remember how stressful it was. (Ended up staying at my K-12 school…couldn’t say goodbye!)

Did anyone here apply to Otis? I called admissions and they said they’ll be sending out decisions this week. It’s not high on my list, but I’m still nervous, haha.

@NYCMomof3 my kiddo got a note like that from MICA too and it was such a nice touch. I was really impressed with all the communication from them and looking forward to visiting with my S for their Junior Visit Day in April. Congrats!

And yes, I felt like I needed MANY cocktails after all of this!!! And waaaaahhh I’m already starting it again with son :open_mouth:

@NYCMomof3 Congrats to your daughter’s acceptances. Look forward to hearing about her final decision process.

We’re planning to visit RIT in April. Let me know if you have any tips/advice for the upcoming visit. My D did meet with a RIT rep at Chicago’s NPD; do you recommend asking for another critique?

@cag60093 I forget if your kid is doing animation or illustration, but we toured RIT and had asked in advance for a tour of the more ‘fine arts’ facilities since my D was interested in doing Illustration. The general tour does go through the animation facilities but NOT the fine arts ones.

We had it after the general session and tour. It got a bit messed up in that the faculty who was supposed to do it (D didn’t bring portfolio since it’d already been accepted at a regional portfolio review day) was unavailable so a senior took us around. But at least we got to see the facilities more.

That personalized note from the MICA admissions rep. was such a nice touch for my D as well. I felt that out of all the schools we visited, MICA was the most gracious both with the good advice and just in terms of staying connected to the applicants.

For those waiting on the numbers from MICA, when are you expecting the fin. aid. package? For D15 (who applied EA) it wasn’t released till mid-April or so. They also distributed the last round of merit aid at the same time so she wasn’t able to make any final decisions about her school till she saw those numbers. We don’t qualify for fed. need-based so the merit was key and I think MICA was the only school not to give her a complete picture on that till the actual FA package. Have no idea whether they run the merit distribution the same this year but just an FYI in case they do.

@JBStillFlying
I agree re: MICA. My D received her acceptance yesterday along with the note. MICA had nice consistency as well…the counselor who wrote the note was the man we met at our local college fair and who my D was in touch with re: questions on her portfolio. It made for a nice, clear process. A preliminary financial award was included but there was also a letter stating that final notifications would be mailed April 2. Stafford loans were included in the preliminary award, as well.
My D is planning on attending the accepted students day on Feb. 18…anyone else?

@cag60093 We visited RIT last winter and arranged an interview with Malcolm Spaull, chair of film & animation. He was very informative and even took us around personally to their facilities. We did not do a portfolio review at that time as we had met with another rep from RIT at National Portfolio Day. Impressive facilities, very career-oriented program.

@NYart15 - that’s good that they include need-based in the initial package now. I think those were included in April of my daughter’s admission year but TBH all we cared about was the merit so can’t remember for sure. :slight_smile:

My daughter’s AO was wonderful - she did her initial portfolio review during a campus visit, and was at the Portfolio Day seven months later and reviewed her portfolio again, building on that initial advice. She was the one who wrote the note as well. It was very clear that she knew our daughter and her work very well. It was pretty impressive.

Thank you all.

@cag60093 We visited RIT last summer and then we met them again at NPD in November. When we visited in August, we had a tour of the dorms (part of the info session) then the animation and film school which included a tour (by a grad student) of the majors the two kids (only two families ) were interested in applying to. We saw animation and stop motion. I feel like she showed us everything there was to show in that building. We did request a meeting with the head of animation. He was so very nice and took a lot of time talking to us about their program. He also gave great feedback to my daughter on her portfolio and so happens was the person representing animation at RITs table at the NY NPD. He remembered my daughter after seeing some of her art again. They chatted for about 20 min at NPD and it was all promising.

FYI…he told us at NPD that the animation major will start requiring portfolios next fall.

@NYart15 congrats on MICA!

@ArtAngst you liked it so much, you’re doing it again :smiley: glad you had a year in between to vegg a bit

Thanks @NYCMomof3 ! You too and to everyone else who’s relieved by good news this week!

I’m starting to follow the musical theatre threads for my D for next year and if I’ve learned anything it’s that our kids will land where they will land and we’ll all make the best of it. That, and how crazy the audition process is going to be next year.

@NYCMomof3, yes, we should totally go out for a drink once this stuff is done. :slight_smile: (also in NYC–well, Riverdale, actually). Congrats on the MICA acceptance! Agree about the handwritten note–my daughter also got one and it was a very unexpected but appreciated touch!!! Bonus points to MICA! How do they have time for that!!!

@NYart15, my daughter is planning to attend the Feb. 18th accepted students day at MICA, too! At this point, she barely remembers the school, since it was one of the first we visited, about a year and a half ago. Since she didn’t get into her top choice, it’s not going to be an easy decision for her, choosing. Hopefully the admitted student visits will help.
