Art School admission 2018

@NYCMomof3 @KCHWriter
We’re in Westchester county. Drinks on May 1st?

We haven’t visited MICA yet so we’re looking forward to it.

My dad is evil…I get a text from him saying “a very interesting package is here”, knowing I’ve been waiting for Ringling’s decision all month (they send their acceptances in cute boxes full of goodies)… turned out to be my new order of contacts. UGH. My parents had quite the laugh, lol.

@pastelrain wow!

@NYart15 @KCHWriter I’d love to do drinks on 5/1 or sometime very soon after that. Champagne all around! We will have a lot to celebrate :smiley:

@NYCMomof3 I’ll be celebrating from TX!

@IDtoTX yay texas!! sad that there’s no good art schools in this area.

I’ll be looking forward to everyone’s decisions!!

@NYart15 me toooooooooooo!!!

@ArtAngst, @NYart15, @NYCMomof3 Thank you sharing your visit experience. We are currently registered for the general info session and campus tour at RIT. I did contact the School of Art for an additional appointment as well. I have not heard back yet. I might as well contact the film and animation school too since we will not be returning to RIT for another visit in the fall.

My D is a HS junior and has not fully decided on a concentration yet, but her strength is illustration. She likes animation and have expressed some interest, but she’s unsure if she wants to sit in front of a computer screen endlessly. She loves gaming though and has no problem playing hours and hours in front of a screen: )

@NYCMomof3. Thanks for the tip about portfolio requirement for animation. She is planning to submit a portfolio to all schools, but it’s good know that RIT is changing requirements.

The schools we plan to visit in April are: CMU, Vassar, Bard, Wash U, SCAD. We already visited Pratt, RISD, and Cooper Union. She really liked Pratt and RISD, but ruled out Cooper Union. We didn’t have enough time to see SVA unfortunately. Any advice or tips on visiting the schools mentioned above?

We want our D to apply to non-art schools as well in case she decides later she wants to study more than art. I realize that this will add more work and stress on her next fall.

@cag60093 From what you listed that you’re planning to visit, I visited SCAD last March. Be prepared for a lot of walking, the campus is very much spread out all over the city. You’ll mainly be seeing the buildings pertaining to the majors you’re interested in (illustration/sequential art were in a group together, for instance). We were able to schedule a portfolio review on campus while I was there, all I had to do was email someone from admissions and they were very good about getting someone to sit with me that day. It was a short, yet helpful review. (SCAD doesn’t actually require a portfolio for admissions, but they do for most scholarships, so it doesn’t hurt to submit one.) The buildings are decorated beautifully by the way, it’s kind of what you imagine an art school to look like…if that makes sense, lol.

@cag60093 have you investigated summer programs? my DD did a summer program at SCAD that really solidified that she wanted to pursue Industrial Design. She enjoyed her time at SCAD and it made her comfortable applying there.

@cag60093 I agree with what IDtoTX suggested, precollege summer programs. My daughter always knew she wanted to study animation but she wasn’t sure if she’d really enjoy it. She did a summer at Cooper Union (total waste of time. She felt that they didn’t teach her anything). Last summer she took 3D computer Animation at SVA and knew it was for her. It was the only time that I’ve seen her so passionate about anything. She’s stay late at school after a long day, she’d go in on the weekends and spent 8-10 hours working on her animation). I never once had to suggest anything to her, it all was what she wanted to do. It seemed like she lived in their studio for three weeks. Also, being at SVA changed her mind about the school. She initially wasn’t going to apply but she really loved everything about it and decided it was in her top two schools.

@NYCMomof3 congrats on being so close to the finish line! I certainly know what it’s like to go through the NYC admission process! My eldest daughter went through it for HS, DS through it for K and then HS and luckily my youngest only had to do K since she ended up being accepted at a private k-12. Good luck! I’d love to join you for a celebration!

Congrats all around!

@cag60093 I join in recommending a summer pre college program. DS attended CMU’s pre college and it was amazing! I’m sure having great recs from his professors and TAs helped with admissions and it gave him a chance to really get a feel for the school.

My son started at SCAD 2 weeks ago. So far, so good, other than some roommate issues. But that can happen anywhere. We are dealing with them and hope to have a resolution soon. My son is loving his classes and being around so many talented students and staff. He is a sophomore (did CC first.)

My 2nd child graduates this year. He is most likely starting at CC first, but he has an interesting UNC School of the Arts and would be interested in a Film major.

I know this is a state specific school, but is anyone here familiar with it? We are going to the open house in March.

^^ UNCSA is currently ranked at #14 for top film schools in the US (Hollywood reporter). Have always heard excellent things about it. When you consider in-state tuition especially, it’s a steal for the level of quality. Good luck to him!

@CalGirl17 my D16 is at SCAD as well and is also a sophomore. Majoring in animation and hopes to fit in a minor in storyboarding as well (she’ll be speaking to her advisor about that this quarter now that her Gen Eds are out of the way). What is your son majoring in?

@IDtoTX, @NYCMomof3, @itsreallymia2 I agree with you. My D did SAIC’s precollege last summer and will attend Ringling’s this summer. My H and I finally understood that art is more than a hobby for her after SAIC. She took it very seriously, produced some beautiful pieces, and enjoyed working on art all day long. But it was only two weeks, so Ringling’s 4 week precollege will provide another opportunity to test the waters if art school is the path for her.

She attends a suburban HS with good resources, but the art department is very small with few options and limited number of truly talented students. My D stands out in this setting, bc she has the motivation, drive, and talent (I think) compare to most peers in her current AP Art. Even she aware that she’s not challenged and very little guidance is given to her specifically bc she plugs along without any prodding from her teachers. I guess I have internal fears that it will be a rude awakening when she’s surrounded by all talented students in art college. I suspect that she’ll rise to the challenge but what if she doesn’t. I know nothing is a sure thing and my fears are coming from a protective mom.

@CalGal17. I’m glad your son is loving SCAD. Wish him the best. Keep us posted on his progress and experience. I

@cag60093 beyond still life drawing and Exploring different mediums I’d encourage your DD to delve deeply into her passion. One of the things I heard during this process is that they like to be able to see what they are passionate about. Some schools are more conceptual than others and want to know “why” they are making the art they choose.

She may find it helpful to challenge herself to work on her art every day. A sketch, painting, starting a piece, creating a concept for future work…anything. It doesn’t have to be hour long sessions every day but getting used to working on her art, not only work that is assigned may challenge her.

She’s already an artist. Her passion has lead her to the decision to attend art school. That’s a big deal.
