Art School admission 2018

anyone else here apply to cooper union?

Just accepted to Otis College of Art and Design!!

Woo hoo! Congrats @pastelrain ! Is it a serious contender?

@IDtoTX To be honest…they sent me a fee waiver, I recognized the campus name and did research on their illustration program. Pretty decent but the very tiny campus has it more toward the bottom of my list…but it feels really good to get accepted, haha! I’ll also have to take the financial aid into consideration, so you never really know. (As of right now with all of my acceptances, SVA has a far lead)

@cag60093 --So glad your D is doing pre-college at Ringling. It certainly helped us to realize that art was the right path for our D. It was an intense program and her art grew so much in those few short weeks that we were blown away. She came home with definite goals for her future. It was art 24/7 pretty much and she just loved every minute.

Congrats @pastelrain!! You’ve probably mentioned it before but who else are you waiting on?

@NYart15 I’m waiting on a lot…So far I’ve been accepted to University of Houston, University of North Texas, Otis, SVA and ArtCenter. I’m waiting on RISD, Ringling, Laguna, Pratt, Parsons, RIT, MICA and SCAD. Here’s hoping for more good news!

@pastelrain please please please post as you get those results - I know you plan to but as a mom with kids at Pratt and SCAD I’m following your journey with fascination. Plus you know all of us parents will be cheering you on =D>

Very impressed that you handled 13 applications, at least 10 of which had portfolio requirements, on your own.

@pastelrain my daughter was also accepted to University of Houston. She’s still trying to get into the Architecture school - they accepted her in Exploration Studies. I don’t think she’ll end up going there but it’s super attractive cost wise between in-state tuition and a scholarship. What major were you applying to at UH?

Woo-hoo, congrats, @pastelrain!!!

@pastelrain Congrats on Otis! Keep sharing.

@gouf78 Thanks for sharing. My D is looking forward to Ringling this summer. We too suspect that the challenge will be good for her or she’ll learn it may not be.

@itsreallymia2 Thanks for the advice. Yes, she tries to draw outside of her classes, but her time is so limited right now with junior year academic load, concentration pieces for AP Art, hockey and robotics. All time consuming activities. That’s one of the reasons why she is looking forward to Ringling precollege. She won’t have any other commitments during it.

I forgot to add that I was accepted to CCA…I think I mentioned it earlier in the forum but forgot that on my last post…So accepted to six, waiting on 8. 14 total…I’m so extra.

And thank you all!! I will keep updating as this journey continues.

@IDtoTX I applied to their graphic design major as they didn’t have an illustration major or anything close that interested me (I only applied because my parents really wanted me to, haha). I got in for my major no problem but I don’t think graphic design is very competitive.

I will be in NYC picking up youngest from first year at SVA around first of May… count me in on champagne to celebrate with you all!!! @NYCMomof3 (there’s a place close to daughter’s dorm that serves bottomless mimosas with brunch for $10 : )

@JBStillFlying My son is a sophomore Animation major as well. He is a transfer student starting this quarter.

@JBStillFlying Thanks. He is a senior this year and really isn’t prepared to apply yet, but says he is fine with starting at Community College. Honestly, I think that will give him an extra year to really think things through, visit some more schools, and start getting his portfolio together.

Changing gears and thought to post on this thread since you may be the best to provide suggestions. I am looking ahead to graduation and looking at hosting a graduation celebration for DS but I would also like to make it into an art themed exhibit where he could exhibit his art. Most family have not seen it and this would be a nice way to celebrate DS accomplishments. Too much? Has anyone done this or thinking about it? Thoughts? Suggestions?

@magnetnh I don’t think it’s too much since plenty of other families showcase their kids sports awards, team pics etc and well, art doesn’t generally have much to show for it except the actual art!

Considering all the art work my kiddos were producing when little, I set up our dining room as a mini gallery. We have picture rails/shelves that runs 3/4" up the wall and there’s bulletin boards painted to match where we display their latest artwork. Usually it’s a mix of both kids stuff but for the grad party (which we hosted at our house/backyard) DD picked her fav art, graduation awards, tassels etc and displayed them.

@magnetnh sounds like such a great idea! For my 18th birthday this year my parents did something similar where they hung my art and put fake ridiculous prices on them to make it look like an art gallery, it was really funny. For the cake, they hired a family friend to make one that looked like a paint palette, it was so cute.

I can’t believe it’s almost February…senior year is going by so fast! This weekend has been dedicated to intense art making as I realized my IB art show in April is closer than it seems…lol.

@ArtAngst and @pastelrain thanks for your input! Now I have to find a nice hall rental to accommodate it.
