Art School admission 2018

“where they hung my art and put fake ridiculous prices on them to make it look like an art gallery,”

I should have gotten a clue so much sooner about my D and her future aspirations.
At about the age of seven she put prices on her drawings and decided to sell them. I still have them.

I’m sorry if this was already answered (I’m catching up, this thread is very helpful).

Does anyone know of degree partnerships (Brown/RISD, Tufts/SMFA, etc) that have notable film/tv production programs (not studies)?

I’ve looked at the two already mentioned, plus JHU/MICA.

@romns116 Not sure if this is what you’re thinking of, but I know Ithaca College and Syracuse have strong tv/film production majors and they’re big enough schools/programs where one could double major.

@ArtAngst I was looking for university & art school partnerships (dual degree programs) where the art school has a ranked film production. Brown & RISD have one of these partnerships. RISD film program is highly regarded.

I’m looking at LAC/Universities (with these partnerships) as options because the ubiquitous film schools that meet full need are high reaches for my son. These partnerships may be alternatives for low-income (0 EFC), semi-high achieving film/tv majors.

@romns116 gotcha - BTW I have a kid currently at RISD and my brother teaches at Brown However I’m not terribly familar with their film program (what little I do know makes it sound very conceptual - so it may be worth investigating if that’s not the type of program you’re looking for).

Anyhow, might also be worth re-posting this in the main thread since others more familiar with film programs can chime in.

@romns116 i’m not familiar with any of the film programs but i do know that Cleveland institute of Art is associated with Case Western (although i don’t think it’s dual degree) and Milwaukee Institute of Art has a partnership with Marquette.

So…I finished up my SCAD application a couple of weeks ago and got the confirmation email that I should get a decision in two weeks. I log into my portal today and there is just nothing there. No checklist items and no status update…anyone who applied to SCAD have this happen?

@pastelrain i would reach out to your admissions counselor at SCAD. We had to email my daughters because her portal was showing that her ACT score was missing even though we had sent it a month previously.

@IDtoTX Will do! I’m sure it’s just a glitch or something, but I just get so skeptical of these colleges…lol.

@pastelrain Definitely email your admissions counselor. My DS information is still on the portal and he was accepted to SCAD months ago. BTW, they are very good about getting an admission decision out quickly. Came via email within a week. SCAD is a great school and it’s in our top 3 choices. Good luck!

@sbgal2011 i received a letter from SCAD today about a new program called GRADpath. Apparently it’s a fast track undergrad plus masters program. Looks interesting. Have you heard of it?

When my D was accepted to SCAD I think they e-mailed her. She had a portal but it was just to check to make sure they got all her materials. BTW every time we would reach out her AO responded almost immediately.

@IDtoTX My son received the GradPath letter as well. I wonder if it is too early to commit to grad school at this point. I Need to do some research if it is worth of going to grad school in the field of animation. Does the scholarship extend to grad school if the student signs up for the GradPath program. :slight_smile:

SCAD actually does extend the scholarship (and applies it in the summer quarter as well, FYI) to something like 225 credit hours total for undergrad study, so you might check whether it applies to GRAD path. Not GRADPath is open for all majors but if it works for your major you might want to look into it. An MFA (assuming that’s the degree to work towards) is a terminal degree for many professions and qualifies the recipient to teach at art/design schools as well. If there’s a way to get those credits via an advanced program and SCAD’s your place for grad study (as opposed to RISD, Yale, MICA, etc.) then it’s definitey worth looking into, esp. if it ends up saving you money over the long run. They have already implented the Integrated Path for architecture so not surprised that they are branching out a bit to offer something similar for other majors.

Great news as DS successfully passed the portfolio review for Tyler School of Art at Temple. They are still waiting for final grades from counselor but I think this is as close to admission as you get. They sent a letter about the Portfolio Scholarship Competition which is done by uploading images to slide room - but it is of course $10. Has anyone done it? Is it worth it?

@magnetnh Congratulations! We loved Tyler!

I’d definitely go for the portfolio scholarship.

Woo-hoo, congrats, @magnetnh!! Great news. :slight_smile:

@itsreallymia2 and @KCHWriter Thanks so much!

@magnetnh Congrats!!!
I would totally give the portfolio scholarship a go. You’re paying a small fee to gamble when the payoff might be really good. Plus, your DS has done the hard work already.

Good luck!!

@magnetnh congrats and definitely go for the portfolio scholarship!! Like others have said, it’s a small price for saving a lot in the long run.
