Our son is a freshmen in the school of film at UNCSA and he absolutely loves it. The program is intense, but when students graduate they are very prepared to work in the film industry. We are not from NC by the way.
Hi All, this is an exciting time of year! I can remember when we started getting acceptance letters this time 2 years ago.
I am a parent of a student who attends Laguna College of Art + Design. Our son is in his 3rd semester and is a Graphic Design + Illustration major. He was accepted to 8 other schools, but chose LCAD for their small student to teacher ratio (18:1), high employment rate upon graduation, great networking opportunities, and beautiful beach location.
Our son is thriving at this small art college. He has been hired to do several commissions and the work he is producing is phenomenal. He has learned a lot in just over a year. The work load is intense, but doable. His general ed courses are taught by professors who teach at UCI, UCSD, and other local universities. The GE courses are taught well, but also taught while bearing in mind that these are art students who have projects that are very time consuming.
If anyone has questions about LCAD and/or the surrounding area PM me or post here. I would love to answer them if I can.
I believe there is an Open House in early March. This is when my son made the decision 2 years ago. We saw him in this environment that day and we knew this was going to be his choice.
Go to all the Open House/school visit sessions that you can attend. Very helpful when trying to decide between schools.
@samsamg thanks for the update! We visited LCAD last summer with kid2 and he’s very interested in applying. One question we had, how hard (& costly) was it to find housing now for your child’s sophomore year?
@ArtAngst There are plenty of options for housing. We had no problem finding a place. Our son is living with just one other student in a huge 1 bedroom with a den (turned art studio) in a really nice complex about 5 miles from campus. The total for rent and utilities is $1000/ month (he is our only child). He does have friends who are 4 persons to a 2 bedroom paying $500 each a month.
Now if you still want your child to be shuttled, LCAD shuttle service goes to The Artisan all day long, every 20-30 minutes (with an app that shows where the drivers are). The Artisan (formerly known as Club Laguna) has many options (size & price wise). The complex is very large and management really likes the students.
A couple other friends of his found studio & 1 bedroom apartments 2 blocks from the beach from $1600-2800/ month.
There are also students renting guest rooms in larger Laguna Beach homes.
One of the things that worried me about LCAD was the lack of on-campus housing, however, this setup has really made our kid much more independent. He has even taught himself to cook! And the food is good!
@samsamg Thank you sharing info about housing. My junior D talked to a LCAD rep at NPD and was interested in but I was concerning about lack of housing and meal plans. Is having a car a necessity?
@cag60093 no, there are lots of students who don’t have cars all four years.
Everyone seems to know a classmate who does have a car though.
The LCAD Shuttle service (that runs up and down Laguna Canyon) has a stop just a couple of blocks from a grocery store, lots of other restaurants, art galleries, LCAD Art Supply, & other shops.
The city of Laguna has free shuttle service to many other places along the coast during the summer.
Due to just the campus feel and lack of housing, my family and I have decided to take Laguna off of the list, but thank you for all of the helpful information! We were seriously considering Laguna because the tuition + scholarship + possible future FA would make it super affordable, but I did tour last year and I really just didn’t feel the vibe (I don’t know how to explain it other than that…haha) of the school or area. The student work is probably one of the best I’ve looked at out of all the schools I applied to. Truly phenomenal.
It’s coming down to Ringling, MICA and RISD (if i get in). Ringling is beating MICA, but if MICA’s FA is a winner, I’ll be very torn.
But if I get into RISD…sighs and looks into the distance
Did anyone else attend MICA’s early admitted students day on Sunday? We did, and we’re so glad we went. It’s been a very long time since we originally visited/toured–they’ve even changed their first-year program since then. Anyway, we came away truly impressed, and my daughter feels really good about the school. I was particularly impressed by the quality of student art I saw. Just wondering what other folks thought!
@KCHWriter Wish I could have! Had too much work at school to handle which made it impossible to fly out for a weekend. I’m in a MICA admitted student snapchat group and got to see all the wonderful pictures people were sending from the event and it looked great! I wish I had the chance to go visit before May 1st but with everything going on in March and April I don’t think I can I visited last year and liked it but I feel like I didn’t give the school a fair enough chance since I saw it right after RISD.
@pastelrain When will RISD release their decisions? You have a lot of good choices. Do you mind if I ask you why you ruled out SCAD? We are wrestling with our decision about SCAD versus other schools. For me, there just may be a bit too much controversy about SCAD and it makes me nervous. Wondering what your thoughts are.
