@pastelrain I agree, nothing wrong with good Comm college, but I probably would have pushed harder for a gap year if it came down to that.
@ArtAngst I hadn’t even thought of New Paltz or heard of the other 2. Anyway, she would have shunned those as well. LOL. I made no suggestions as to where she should apply. She picked the schools.
@sbgal2011 She mostly applied to schools in NYC/NE.
We visited Tyler, came in through Penn Station. She did not apply here. Huge school with sports everywhere.
@NYart15 - yep - be sure to dm some more if you have any particular questions. My daughter is finishing up her junior year and is BUSY - next year will be moving into a single in Willoughby so very excited about that!
@NYart15 My first D went to NYU for MT (Steinhardt). My younger D was the art major at NYU. So I lurk on both boards. Both D’s are talented in both areas, and each could have gone either way in terms of majors. But once older D chose MT, I think younger D wanted her own path post-HS. She still sings and took voice in college as elective credits. She’s currently teaching art, but working on the school’s musical. Older D is back at grad school for MBA. Good luck with your journey! See you on the MT board!
@uskoolfish I thought I saw you over there! I guess that creative gene is a strong one. I feel like I’ve read of several sets of siblings going into something art-related.
I am woefully behind on posting but here are the results/mail that were scattered all around the house. The weeks just went by in a blur.

RISD
1 traditional reach said NO (because we like standardized tests)
1 stand alone art reach said NO (we can tell that you procrastinated)
anyone care to take a guess which will be the least expensive to attend ?D was never going to apply to a rural school. I tried to convince her to try Canada & the UK, but it didn’t quite catch on. Still no concrete decisions yet, but only 2 are currently in the running. Anyone curious about scholarship info can slide into my PMs, or whatever they call it here.
@artmummy Without peeking at websites, I’m going to hazard a guess that PrattMWP is the least expensive to attend.
Sorry I meant least expensive for us, after tallying up Financial Aid. (there was about 1,000 dff between MWP & RISD)
After crunching all the numbers and taking into account all the additional fees on the websites, RISD worked out to be the least expensive.
I am looking forward to the next 4 years of MORE art supplies, MORE tools and MORE individual course fees. :((
Artmummy, did your D finalize her decision?
@madgemini4 I haven’t submitted the Deposit yet, but it’s looking like RISD.
I just have a final speech to deliver to D at dinner tonight, about the rigor of RISD etc before I submit it.
Good plan! Is it Pratt MWP otherwise?
Yep @artmummy same thing happened to us - RISD turned out to be less expensive (other than our SUNY). Feel free to DM me on the rigors of that first year! DD really got walloped emotionally…she did fine grade wise but there was a lot for her to process. Some of it was necessary and would have happened anywhere, but some of it was probably due to the really high expectations of RISD. Altho thankfully she is MUCH happier now that she’s settled into her major.
It’s been a crazy four months. I had college admissions come in and then I was dealing with boarding school admissions. First my daughter was definitely going to RIT then she was hesitant to pull the trigger and waited for more scholarship and FA info to come out. She only applied to four schools and got into all of them. She gave up MassArt pretty early on and was left with RIT, MICA and SVA for 3D computer Animation. It started to look like SVA would win over the rest but it seemed to me like she was settling. She loved SVA (she did her Precollege there and my favorite program) but she never really wanted an art school. She wanted to be with all kind of kids not just artists. As much as I wanted her to be steps from home, I knew she needed to be at a regular University. If things don’t work out, she can always transfer. Deposit was submitted and she will join the Film and Animation department at RIT this August. I felt like this process was never going to end. Now I have two move in dates this August. One to college and the other to high school.
Thanks for all of the info over the years on this forum. You guys rock!
@NYCMomof3 Congrat to your DD! Sounds like it worked out perfectly. My DS also wanted a more traditional university, not just an Art School, so he’s off to VCU in the fall. Best of luck to both of your children as they start their new adventures in the fall!
@NYCMomof3 I am very happy to hear that your daughter made a decision! Congrats! It sounds like she was very thoughtful in the decision process. My HS junior daughter really liked RIT when we visited. We met the heads of animation and illustration programs. They were very giving with their time; itreally helped her get a better look at the programs at RIT. She, like your daughter, wants to have a larger university experience with other student populations. Please come back to this thread next year and let us know how your daughter is doing. I really love learning about everyone’s experience.
Congrats to everyone on those final decisions!! Yay, we’re done!! (well, not really…I have an 11th grader, too!) Now, where’s the wine?! Looking forward to hearing everyone’s experiences.
Congratulation to everyone for the successful journey!!
My daughter started the journey late… Last week, We visit Brown, and got on the tour of RISD. She fell in love and wanted to apply.
She has been in Art class since age six, (group lesson of four people, two hours a week.). She did many kinds of arts, drawing, painting, collage etc. She did not attend national competition, and won several first prizes at local art festival etc.
For those who got in RISD, what kind of arts training you have? Does she have any hope?
We tried to register for RISD pre-college, all classes are full and she will be placed on waiting list.
By the way, She wants to study graphic design.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
@f2000sa what grade is your daughter currently in? That will help to know in terms of what she has time to focus on etc for her applications.
My DD is a sophomore at RISD and was fairly lucky to have a good amount of art classes at her high school. She also took alot of art summer camps since she was young, and a program similar to a pre-college where she was able to take a life drawing class for college credit (that helped add a lot of figure drawing to her portfolio) of the summer.
She also had very competitive grades (lots of APs, high test scores etc) and a lot of time/leadership positions in school activities in addition to an outside job/volunteering.
Feel free to DM me if you’d like more info. She also visited the campus twice and really tweaked her portfolio for them based on feedback at a NPD her junior year.
@ArtAngst Thanks , My daughter is a junior and is looking for colleges. We made decision too late. She only has one summer for pre-college class. Hope she can get off the waiting list.
@f2000sa It doesn’t sound like you made the decision too late at all. Your D has been doing her art for a long time. My D only decided on an art path the summer before junior year. But she worked hard at a couple of local art schools and did a precollege portfolio development at FIT last summer and will attend Pratt this fall. So I would say there’s definitely hope!! Maybe stay in touch with admissions and see if they can do some preliminary portfolio guidance?
Any precollege program will be a valuable immersion experience to make sure that she really wants to pursue art full-time in college.
@sbgal2011 thank you so much. Good luck to your son at VCU! It’s an exciting time for them
