@cag60093 I will keep up with this thread. Don’t hesitate to message me and ask questions later on this fall.
@NYart15 Thanks, That is very encouraging. Congratulations to your daughter!!
@NYCMomof3 Congrats on both college and boarding school decisions!
Thanks @f2000sa! I found this thread very helpful along the way. Please keep us posted or ask anything.
Every school has their strengths and as a future SVA student I also agree that Illustration is not their strongest major. Computer Art is the best though.
Thanks, @NYartmom Yes, this thread is very helpful. I read every pages, and got a lot help from many folks. I will keep everyone posted.
Congrats on everyone’s final decisions!
Good job everyone!!! My SVA girl is home for the summer! What a great year she had! Boy, it was a struggle moving everything to storage and the rest home! FYI… home included 15 filled sketch books, and over 300 large drawings. I had to buy big tubes at UPS to roll them up and pack in luggage (3 of them!). We could have mailed them home, but decided to mail a box of clothes instead LOL
The thread has been so quiet since we’ve all landed. I’d like to know of the computing requirements your individual schools have and if you have purchased already. We just learned that we will require a Mac Book Pro laptop with the touch pad and all the bells and whistles. This along with all of the software requirements are a large cost for the school to share so late in the game so wondering how you have handled this expense.
@magnetnh be sure to find out if it’s required or recommended. If the former then 529 funds can be made available for the purchase.
@JBStillFlying Thanks - we confirmed it was required and I will apply 529 funds but I am disappointed to be informed now since I was earmarking the funds for other expenses.
@matnetnh we had funds set aside for computer purchases and the total still turned out way higher than I was expecting! D15 and D16 both in creative fields that make use of the Macbook pro fully loaded (or almost - perhaps we saved on a bit less storage capacity and made them purchase external hard drives to back up their stuff). It’s a significant purchase but will be with your DC for several years, well into his/her professional life. It’s an amazing machine and you can’t beat the graphics capabilities. My daughter’s (old) MacBook pro had more computing speed than the Cray computer my husband used for his work many years ago!
Hopefully you’ll make it up a bit down the road when you don’t have to buy much in the way of art supplies
@magnetnh Yes, we were informed the summer before as well. Same requirements as you specified above. Then we also had to pay for the monthly student adobe suite, $19.99. Not sure if some schools pay this cost. I think you can pay up front at a lower cost.
Art supplies were expensive the first year. Second year DS hardly purchased any supplies. Printing costs can add up during finals though.
Also, Apple does do a student discount in August I believe. It’s $100 off when you show your acceptance letter. Our son also received a free pair of Beats headphones (worth $250) during the student promotion. Make sure you ask about this. You want to buy when you can get the discount.
Our son knew it was a big expense and said it counted as his Christmas gift. Not that we ever buy something that expensive, but it was sweet of him to suggest.
Edit to say, Apple has education pricing now. Looks like new college students get $200 off anytime of the year!
Best Buy often has very good discount on Macbooks for Students.
@samsamg and @f2000sa Thanks for the info. I was able to find the $200 off for the education pricing. I wonder if we should hold off until August for the Beats offer…
@magnetnh Just ask an employee if they know about any upcoming promotions for students. They are usually pretty forthcoming. At least they are here in So Cal. I checked around online and saw that last year they offered the Beats starting in July.
This thread has been fascinating! I was on the edge of my seat rooting for all of you, who I’ve never met. Congratulations to all.
I cannot believe that we are weeks away from moving her into RIT for her new adventure as a college freshman. Good luck to everyone on their new adventures!!!
Thanks @NYCMomof3!!! It’s been quite a ride. I loved reading about everyone’s story. This was a very helpful and pleasant thread to be a part of. As soon as my little artist happily moves into Pratt in 2 weeks, it’s her sister’s turn to be the center of attention. You’ll find me in the Musical Theatre threads having heart palpitations.
Good luck to all…the world needs more beauty, go create!
