Thanks @cag60093! Our NPD in NYC was good. Our game plan was to go to the lines of schools who had not seen her work (we had Portfolio reviews over the summer when we visited schools). We planned out visiting 4 school tables and we got them all in. Three of them had never seen her work and the fourth (her favorite) had seen some of it but she had added new pieces since her review in August. The reviewers were all very impressed and the feedback was all positive. She received either “excellent or exceptional” ratings on the paperwork the schools gave her. They love the diversity of her portfolio (oil painting, charcoal, pencil, collage, wood, etc.) and also her out of the box thinking with some of the pieces. There were two reviewers that knew who she was when they saw her name (they had been emailing back and forth with her since the summer) which was great…it made for a very relaxed dialogue. Now it’s time for her to upload her portfolio and hit submit. Her ED deadline is this Wednesday and the EA deadline is on 12/1
Just a quick update - DS got his acceptance email from SCAD on Friday. No word on scholarship money, hoping to hear next month.
@sbgal2011 congratulations
AP ART question…do the schools look at this score for scholarships? My daughter got a 5 and was wondering if that will count towards anything financial
^^ It might for admission and scholarship purposes, @NYCMomof3 so of course make sure the schools have that info - as well as any other AP score she currently has (assuming they are good - excellent). Of course AP studio credits tend not to transfer to the art colleges but they kind of expect their applicants to have taken or be currently taking AP art so if she has a top score it’ll help demonstrate she has a strong application. And then I think Art History credits MIGHT transfer, depending on the school.
@JBStillFlying thanks. She had a great review with MCAD. The lady that she’s been emailing with for a few months was the person at NPD. She spent so much time with my daughter and gave her great feedback. If she gets offered a spot, we will take a trip to check the school out. Can’t wait for this process to be over.
When they recognize you at NPD that’s always a great sign. NPD is also a great opportunity to make some connections and form relationships with these schools.
When my D and I went to NPD in October of her senior year we were complete novices and had only decided to attend a couple of days earlier. Her “portfolio” was really not much more than a bunch of her work stuffed into a carrier and some of pictures of her special effects makeup work. She wasn’t applying to “art school” but rather a STEM school with a well regarded design program (she was applying as an Industrial Design major).
Anyway, there wasn’t a long line for the school she was interested so she got to spend a good amount of time with the reviewer. It turns out she teaches a prosthetics course and was impressed by her make up work. She suggested some things my D should work on but that her portfolio was “accepted”. D had to clarify about 3 times before she realized she did not have to even resubmit her portfolio with her application. She did follow up to make make the acceptance was linked to her application. It was and she was accepted ED about a week after Thanksgiving.
Our local NPD is this coming Sunday - unfortunately AFTER the EA date for about half of the schools my DC applied to. Four of the schools that she has already sent in a portfolio to will be there, and two schools that she is applying to RD in a month or so. Is it worth going for only two schools? Also, would it be worthwhile to stop by the table of the previous school’s she has applied to just to say hello, if the lines are not crazy?
Just registered DC for the event. Guests do not need a ticket, right, just the student?
I am thinking that if we are only there for two schools, would it be worthwhile to go later when lines have died down rather than earlier - or does admission close up early?
@sbgal2011, there was no mention of any scholarship/aid with her notification–hoping that will come soon?? I’m assuming she’ll at least get something merit related, since she has super high academics/SAT score. We’ve since submitted her FAFSA…definitely hoping for some sort of aid!
@KCHWriter I was told that they are waiting to figure out what the rates will be next year. Meanwhile the admissions counselor emailed me a calculator that estimates the amount of aid students will get. Did you get that? If not, I can send it to you in a private message. Not sure if that’s something I can post here, although I don’t see why not.
Why not just use the SCAD NPC? https://www.scad.edu/admission/financial-aid-and-scholarships/financial-aid/net-price-calculator
@proserpine not all NPD’s get crazy - a few years ago my D15 was able to visit with several schools at the local NPD in Minneapolis. Two were high on her list, and a few more were kind of “for fun” as she had some extra time to kill LOL. SAIC in Chicago, on the other hand, gets crazy. It’s a great idea to stop by and say “hi” to the schools she’s already applied to, just to help them put a face to the applicant. They might even want to see her work (again) and give her a heads up of her chances for admission and scholarship. Lots of ways to work those meetings to her advantage!
The NPC is different from the scholarship calculator. It bases your scholarship potential on your GPA, SAT, and intention to submit portfolio. Here is the link:
Sorry, let me try that again!
@JBStillFlying, I just did that SCAD net price calculator and it showed that we would be paying more than we actually will. His scholarship is larger than the calculator shows.
My son starts in January.
@CalGirl17 - when you pay less than the calculator, that’s a great surprise!
Good luck to him!
DS received his scholarship letter, only got $2,500. We will likely rule out SCAD
@sbgal2011 Darn. Sorry. that stinks.
@sbagal2011 - is that total or just the academic portion? Don’t they release creative scholarship offers later this year? That’s how it worked for my D a couple years ago. BTW, we did return to them and ask them to increase it a bit due to a financial gap relative to her #2 choice. She told them she’d commit immediately if they were able to meet us partway - which they did, and then some! So the first round of scholarship money isn’t necessarily the last - for SCAD or any school.
