Art Supplement?

Almost every college I am applying to asks if I would like to submit an art supplement. I understand what it is, but will it hurt you if it is poor? Or can it only help you?

Also, what is the point if you aren't an art major? Is it just another chance to show you are well rounded and capable of other things besides your intended major? Or is it more significant than that?

Does it lessen your chances of admittance if you do not submit one? Or is it more like someone that has an identical application to yours and has a decent art supplement will get in over you because they have it and you don't?

Sorry for all the questions.

You would submit an arts supplement if your music, poetry, dance, painting, etc., is an important part of your application.

You wouldn’t necessarily be planning to major in music or art, but if these activities are an important part of who you are, what you’ve accomplished, and what you bring to the school community, you might want to give some samples of your work.

If the particular school happens to be looking for someone who is a great [whatever type of artist you are], then you might be at a disadvantage over someone who is an equally great [whatever] but provided some documentation/examples for the committee to consider.

If you aren’t an artist, you wouldn’t submit an arts supplement.

Thanks! I just wasn’t sure if it should really be for art/music majors only, or for people who at on the side as well.
