I have photo prints that I want to supplement to my application. I don't have copies to send to all schools. What is the best format to send supplemental visual art work in? I also have of architecture models I created from a summer architecture program I attended, again what is the best format? Also whow much weight do they place on this subject in the admissions process

I also submitted a portfolio. I'm applying as a math/econ major but my extracurriculars reflect a huge interest in art so I thought it'd be nice to submit a portfolio. That said, it may depend on what you say your primary field of interest is. But to be quite honest, I'm not sure that it holds much weight... it couldn't hurt though, right?

Anyways, I found the easiest way of submitting work is taking photos and compiling it on a CD. Dartmouth mentions somewhere on its site that it prefers slides but I spoke to an admissions officer that didn't seem to care. Also, by the time I remembered I had a portfolio to submit, it was too late to get slides made.

I submitted a photography portfolio with my application. One of the schools I applied to required slides, so I used that format for all of my applications. I was pleased with the result; it looked very professional. I also enclosed a brief resume and a page of information about the photographs (title, date, format, etc.).

For whatever it's worth, I believe it helped me in the admissions process, even though I did not apply as a studio art major. I'm considering a minor, though.

andsoitgoes, is your username related to the song? It's one of my favorites.

Hi C,
Helped you in the admission process to Dartmouth or another school? Can one apply as a studio art major? I thought you declare a major once accepted

I am sitting right in front of a post-it in the admissions office saying:

"The Art dept accepts PRINTS or SLIDES only! [[NO CD's]]"

(emphasis theirs, not mine)

You don't apply to a specific major, but you list the ones you're most interested in on your application. I think mine were geography and linguistics. It's only speculation, of course, but I think my photography helped me get into Dartmouth, because nothing about my application was really extraordinary.

C,

I have photo, video and architecture projects. How many phots's did you send? I don't want to overwhelm them with material and it seems unlikely someone from the visual art department is going to come review all this

I sent 20 pictures (one sheet of slides).

very nice work, I took a look at your photo's. Are any of those digital?

No, they're all black and white 35 mm film.
