total number of applications declined last year, possibly due to the decline in number of hs graduates in nys, but overall quality of applicants increased.

i think the number of applicants is probably reflecting demographics – for years, they kept saying how more and more seniors were graduating hs each year, but that this was going to drop off soon – from the article, it seems like it is starting to drop off. that’s just something that would affect all colleges.

also, for years, i think binghamton was thought of as a “safety” school for in-staters looking for a financial safety while applying to privates – given how much harder its gotten to get into binghamton, maybe people looking for a suny financial safety are looking a little harder at the numbers and applying elsewhere? or just in general, people know that the stats that would have gotten someone in 5 years ago wouldn’t get you in the last two years, and applicants at the bottom of the pool are self-selecting out? the article does say that the quality of the application pool has increased which would seem to support that.

as for financial reasons – just as there are those who previously would have been more likely to go to privates who are now looking more seriously at suny’s, there are probably those who previously saw suny’s as their affordable route, who are now looking at cc’s. i just don’t know if that overall shift would account for the decline in applications this past year.
