Why is the acceptance rate(43%) of SUNY-Binghampton so LOW????

I'm trying to apply SUNY-Bing as safety, and it seems like REALLY competitive. how competitive is SUNY-Bing?
or why is the acceptance rate so low in SUNY-Bing?

Over the past four or five years, SUNY Binghamton has received a lot of positive press. That national attention combined with soaring private school tuitions and record numbers of college bound high school seniors has resulted in unprecedented demand for this very high quality state supported school.

the low acceptance rate results from so many unqualified applicants...

Is SUNY Binghampton a better school than SUNY Stony Brook? Because SUNY Stony Brook is one of safties, but its like the worst of my safties, so I might switch it with Binghampton.

If you're thinking the admit rate has anything to do with somewhere being a "better school", a) LOL, and b) last I saw Stony Brook's admit rate was around the same as Binghamton's (maybe a couple of percentage points higher), so even if you insist on using that as a proxy for quality, it doesn't say much.

What fields are you interested in? What do you want from a school?

SUNY Binghampton is often considered to be the best in the New York State system. Stony Brook is right up there as well. Also, Geneseo.

Big question...Are you in or out of state? In-state is much more difficult to get in....Out-of-state very encouraged to apply...I know of at least 10 people with below average stats that were admitted last year from NJ

My guess is that all the publics have seen increases in application (and hence the "lower" admit rate). That is due to a lot of factors - demographics, cost of privates, increase in number of schools kids apply to...

SUNY Binghamton receives more than 25,000 applications, of which about 11,000 are offered admission. Binghamton, like many of the SUNYs, receives a substantial number of applications, in part, because it is common practice in for public school guidance counselors in NYS to recommend that every HS student apply to one or more SUNYs as a "financial safety." As to the question why Binghamton? This is purely anecdotal, but at my D's school many of the kids became familiar with SUNY Binghamton through the Odyssey of the Mind competion. Binghamton hosts the state finals. So when the GC asks which SUNY are you applying to some kids have selected Binghamton becuase they've been there.
