Arts at Dartmouth... Do they exist?

Ok, So I'm a junior in high school who has a "to apply list" that is way to long-I'm sure many people can relate. I am looking to scale down that list by about half to save my sanity next year. I go to a public high school in CA where I am really into the dance (classical) and theater programs, and I want to continue with these activities in college, not as a major, but for fun. I visited Dartmouth, really liked it, but I saw so little evidence of arts there that my parents are urging me to scratch it off my little list. Will someone please convince me that Dartmouth will give me oppertunities to participate in Dance or Drama (that is actually good)?

of course, this is all considering that I get in...

Pilobolus was created at Dartmouth and you might find this interesting:

In addition to the dance ensemble mentioned above there are a number of other dance and theatre groups - check under "performing groups" in this link - several are music but the balance are dance or theater - http://www.dartmouth.edu/~sao/coso/orgs.html

There is a huge Arts center (Hopkins center) right on campus and an art museam. Its a HUGE part of Dartmouth - not sure how you missed it.

Let me assure you, art is plentiful at Dartmouth. Dartmouth has its own theater major, which includes courses in acting, directing, teching, scene and costume design, and even dance.

You can check out the department's website here: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~theater/welcome.html

I took Acting 1 and loved it -- the professors are incredibly experienced but so friendly. Our assigned reading included Antony Sher's Year of the King in which he discusses his preparation for and performance of Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company. We also read and performed scenes from Chekhov's The Seagull.

Like ohmadre said, there are several performing arts groups on campus. These include Vandana (South Asian dance), Sheba (hip hop), Ceili Irish Dancers, and FUSION (everything, including classical). We also have two popular improv groups and several play festivals.

Collis Miniversity offers courses you can take just for fun (non-credit). Two popular courses include ballroom dancing and salsa.

Several dance and theater companies come to visit the Hop every year. For example, last year I saw a very avant-garde but wonderful production of Ibsen's The Doll House.

Edward Albee came to visit Dartmouth last year. He gave an amazing lecture and then discussed with us what he thought of Taylor and Burton's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (he hated Taylor and thought Bette Davis would have done a much better job). Also, an actress named Aisha Tyler visited who is a Dartmouth alum.

By the way, I saw Pilobolus in California before I even knew they were from Dartmouth.
