I'm a transfer student going to Harvard this fall; one of the biggest things I was unhappy about at Northwestern was the lack of many student-run/directed music groups. Yes, it has a great amount of orchestras/ensembles as well as chamber groups. But for the best musicians in the school of music, participation in these ensembles are usually mandatory and repertoire selection always seems to be by the teachers. As a result, the students were so caught up in fulfilling requirements and music for lessons that they hardly played anything else.

Are student run/directed music ensembles (esp. smaller groups) prevalent at Harvard?
How about other arts such as original plays by students etc. ?
