they seriously need to stop. How many people here practice an art form? How many of you are affected by art? Music? Theatre?
Art gives meaning to life
and college resumes

South Carolina governor Nicki Haley is trying to cut arts spending. pm me for petition link, as i'm sure it's not allowed here

I really hated taking those classes in HS. Man, I would’ve done anything to get out of Ceramics or Piano (and I did). I’m just not a terribly creative person (or maybe I am creative, but too creative for what teachers ever wanted me to do) and would’ve rather filled the classes in with academic electives instead.

I do, however, appreciate the arts and I know people whose lives have been changed by it. I think cutting funding is wrong, but in some cases I sometimes feel that money could go elsewhere. Either way, just don’t force me into another art class ever again.

yeah, i guess i hadn’t thought of required arts classes. but i’m sure you at least listen to music and watch tv and use furniture right? Those all involve arts
I’m glad you support the arts :)

As a South Carolinian, I cannot stand Nikki Haley in any sense. If anyone should be recalled, it’s her. But anyway, my family is really committed to the arts in all sorts of ways: we all play an instrument (or two, or three…), my mom is an off-and-on nationally published freelance writer, and for myself, my art class sophmore year was one of my favorite classes that I’ve ever taken. The only reason that I didn’t take an art course last year (or next year, for that matter), was that it didn’t fit in my schedule. This reminds me, my sister made a facebook page a while back for this issue.

Yeah, but it’s bs like HS classes that turned me off out of becoming interested in pursuing an instrument/taking up painting or something like that.

Just because your experience was bad, funding should be stopped? If you ask me, it should be the other way around: increase funding, increase access to supplies + more qualified teachers, have a much greater impact on the students.

I was never really into the arts as a young kid but I always won art competitions in elementary school. I also grew up around band. Now I’m in the colorguard for the marching band at school, I’ve been the captain for two years, and I wouldn’t trade anything for my experience in this performing art. I also got really into wire art and studying painting.

Honestly kids need to be exposed to creativity and cutting art funds wont help. The arts help motivate the mind into creating wonders. Straight academics just isn’t enough to stimulate the mind, in my opinion.

I’m pretty sure I never said that lol, in fact I generally support funding for the arts.

But here’s the thing; at my school, we are lucky to have a somewhat-funded arts program, but there are cuts every year. However, our athletics budget was going to be trimmed by 250k (I don’t know how the hell we get that much or where it goes to, but okay), and they could either raise the money or make cuts elsewhere. As a huge athletics fan, what do you think I would rather see funded? It’s just my opinion and i’m allowed to have one, dealwithit.jpg.

@Bassoon’s last comment; lol, that’s mature, I don’t expect much from a 14 year old though.

If we’re talking about school, they should be spending more money on the actual classes than on athletics the fact that they spend over 250K in athletics is terrifying

It wasn’t really a piano class, it was throw 20 kids in a room with 19 keyboards and have them teach themselves how to play music with 1 teacher. I felt bad for the guy, he would spend time helping one kid while 10 others were waiting.

Oh, I agree, the amount of money is sickening, but it’s sad to me how even though they managed to get the money somehow (/shudders at how), teams are still getting cut.

Our school spends A LOT of money on uniforms for all the sports teams lol it’s crazy. I wish they could use that money for better things such as musical instruments (It’s surprising that so many students wish to play an instrument, but can’t afford one) and better teachers lol.

I am 100% all about theatre. Both acting and tech. We didn’t ever have to deal with cuts, but our budget was generally pretty low. We still put on THE best high school shows in the county, bar-none. I loved ending my senior year by stage managing our school’s production of Into the Woods.. Currently I intend on majoring in theatre, though what actually comes of that is yet to be seen.
