Arts & Sciences Interfaculty

Regarding focusing on degree requirements....I am sad to report that you will be on your own. My daughter's adviser is the head of the whole advising department and she has never been able to meet with him one time. He is too busy or just doesn't care. He does not answer e-mails either. That experience is not unusual. You will have to force the issue and McGill will not allow you to change advisers no matter what the situation is.

However, she has followed the guidelines on the web site, and when she finally entered her third year and met with a A&S adviser she was right on track. There is an incredible range of courses in A&S and a good balance between requirements and electives, ie. my daughter took a Hitchcock film course last semester.

As in EVERYTHING McGill, it is what you make of it...no handholding.

I know this is a stupid question but I am really curious. Does a person in this program need a higher number of courses in order to graduate?
Also, how do the AP credits work for this ? I know that for F of science u cant use more than 18 non-science credits but how would that rule apply to the interfaculty program ?
I know that I will def. have more than 30 credits by the time I graduate hs; so is it possible for me to graduate from McGill in 3 years while doing the dual major thing ?
Thanks for reading all this...

for all majors, 30 credits is the max
just to clarify that for science, in addition to the 18 non-science credits limit you can use however many science credits you want, just so long they add up to 30.

The easiest way to answer that question is to look at the course exemption rules, email an advisor, and/or figure it out from there.

The course catalogue/calendar is fairly straight forward, and should tell you everything you need to know (e.g. look at how many credits you'll get exempted, check where they can be applied, and see how many credits that'll chop off of your graduation requirements).

That's basically the moral of this story: seeing an advisor is a waste of time (at least in the engineering faculty), because they'll just crack open the course calendar and read your whatever's written there.

Course selection isn't flexible in engineering because of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation board, however, I know my twin in Arts has a lot of flexibility for what he can and can't take (if not a lot, then the same amount of flexibility my friends at other colleges/universities have).

The beauty of McGill is the lack of a rigid core curriculum. Compared to schools like U of Chicago (with its famous core curriculum), or other private universities (like U of Rochester and Harvard with their mandatory freshman writing seminars), McGill just lets you do your own thing. I know when it came down to it, I looked at U of R's course catalogue vs. McGill's, and immediately noticed the lack of the phrases "core curriculum" or "mandatory freshman courses" any where in McGill's catalogue (a reality that lead me to the assumption that I'll be able to get to study what I want quicker at McGill than at U of R).

This may all seem irrelevant, and it probably is. I just thought someone might benefit from that.

I was accepted to A&S too!!! (32 ACT, 97.2GPA) and I applied because I thought is was like a liberal arts type program. Is this true? I wanted to major in both History and Math, so I though this would be the best path.

"liberal arts?" I'm not sure I even know what that means anymore. I can tell you that if you truly want to dual math and history major, A&S would definitely be the place you want to be.

If that's your passion, honestly, I wish you nothing but the best of luck. You might be entering a 4+ year personal hell (history at McGill is HARD, not that math isn't).

okay so i got into the A&S interfaculty program....but im wait listed in Faculty of Science

is this right? i thought the faculty of science was easier to get into

I think F of Science got filled up early this year. I saw someone else get waitlisted for F of Science while getting in for A&S on Facebook( or maybe that was u too...lol)
btw, what were ur stats if u dont mind me asking ?

hey rohan i think that mite have been me lol...ru the facebook person with the car as ur main pic?

i had a 30superscored ACT...um 4.7 outta 5GPA

haha yea...
