So I'm planning on sending in an arts supplement with my application to certain colleges, but I just read that it says "Have an instructor who is familiar with your work send us a letter of recommendation." Does this take the place of one of my formal recommendations? Or is it a separate recommendation? I already have asked two teachers to write my formals and I don't think I can just ask them to not, but I also really want my film teacher to write something.

anybody???

Not sure, but I think that these recs supplement your app, so you must send teacher recs and the supplement.

The arts supplement rec is separate, it is included only for schools that take the arts supplement. Unlike the common app one, which your recommender or your guidance counselor submits, this one gets uploaded to the arts supp and goes with the common app. A lot of schools have their own arts supplement requirements, however, and don’t take the common app one, or want a printed copy with the rec submitted separately…many permutations. But to your original question, it doesn’t replace the academic recommendations or change that part of your app in any way.

Bringing this thread back for a sec! So, I’m submitting the arts supplement to all but one of my schools. The ones I’m submitting it to don’t require it, but I plan to major in art, so I figured it’d be a good idea.

The common app says "You must also have an instructor who is familiar with your work send a letter of recommendation to the institutions to which you submit this supplement. " I don’t understand if I’m supposed to send physical copies to my colleges as well as the online one, or if I just need to do it through the common app. Help?! Please?!
