hi all,

Stanford's instructions say to limit the music supplements to 10 minutes; has anyone sent them a full tape, or would this negatively affect the application if it exceeds the time limit?

Sorry to answer your question with a question, but if a music CD was sent now, would they trash it or sort of look at it ( for SCEA)? I’m thinking the former, considering the deadline was Oct. 15th.

I am doing RD, which is due 12/1. Does anybody else have experience with this?

You should know that if you miss the supplement deadline, you can still sometimes schedule an in person audition. Call the music department asap and express your interest in music at Stanford (You do not have to say that you’re planning to be a music major – unless you are, of course.) and see if they have any time slots left in your instrument. Explain your situation. Be nice, and they will try to help you. If you can possibly get to Stanford for this, it is well worth doing.

Thank you, CCSurfer!

You’re welcome. My Stanford student child was in this situation, and the in person audition was not only a chance to present the music but to connect with the faculty member who ran the audition and then conducted something that seemed a lot like an interview, complete with why Stanford questions – so be prepared both to play and to talk. (I’m not sure that all faculty members who audition do this, so don’t read into it if your auditioner doesn’t.) It was a good experience, and based on the acceptance letter, almost certainly figured into the acceptance decision.

Despite all of the CC lore about how you should forget about an arts supplement unless you are being actively recruited by Curtis and are often mistaken for Yoyo Ma by famous conductors who walk past your practice room at Aspen, Stanford does seem to care about having active musicians, actors, and artists on campus, and the supplement or (IMHO even better) in person audition is your way of demonstrating how you will contribute to the cultural life of the school.

lsxw99z,

It is extremely unlikely that they will listen to your tape for more than 10 minutes, so make those first 10 minutes count.

I think sending a full tape will be seen as unable to follow directions at best, and as obnoxious at worst.

hey, im also applying to stanford RD w/ the arts supplement.
but my CD is approximately 12/13 minutes long, since i included 2 pieces. is it alright? cause i dont want to randomly cut my 2nd piece in half!
thanks

12-13 minutes for two pieces is perfectly fine.
