Arts Supplement

I know this applies to not just Barnard, but Barnard is the one I’m sending it to, so I wanted to post the question here. I’m submitting my arts supplement for vocal music, and for my resume, I’m wondering if I should just focus on my high school training or include the training I had like in junior high as well. It asks for years we’ve studied, and I just don’t want them to think that I have only been trained in high school, although college apps focus on that. What should I do?

I think it depends on the quality & seriousness of your previous training. If you had formal training in junior high or sang with a youth choir, you might want to include that. In my area, there are some youth choirs that have kids as young as 8, and it’s considered to be a big deal when kids get accepted to these – it involves a substantial time commitment and certainly if the activity has continued through high school I think it is worth including.

Yeah, I think I’ll include my youth choir. Should I include my private voice lessons as well, or not? I didn’t continue those in high school.

Calmom, you might be able to help me with this as well - I’m sending in a resume for admissions, and I’ve heard that you should make them under two pages, but there’s no way I can make everything fit only two pages. Is that okay? I’ve just kind of bolded and italicized my positions/titles to make those stick out.

Have someone else look at your resume to help you trim down some of the details. The longer it is, the less likely that the person reading your application will actually be able to go through it. If you can’t manage to trim it down, make sure the most important stuff is on the first page. Also, consider consolidating multiple similar items under one heading – again with less detail on the individual stuff.
