Artsy Population

Is there a good amount of artsy guys/girls at Bowdoin? I know that this school offers a good mix of kids, but I’m still afraid of an excessive amount of LAX bros. In general, what are the students like?

There is definitely a niche for you at Bowdoin. There are many kids who are interested in the arts here, and especially many of the theatrical variety, but there are also many who are interested in everything from photography to painting to sculpture to anything I’m forgetting.

What about music?

Oh man yes. Seems like everyone knows a lot about music (i didn’t when i started out at Bowdoin, now I do too). In terms of musical participation, there are loads of student bands, 5 A Capella groups, several orchestra’s, classical bands and choruses.

I’m thinking more about “hipster/art scene” kids. How are these kids compared to say… the Vassar kids?

Are there LAX bros though, Tzar09? Because for some of us Lax bros are a priority, and excessive amounts of hipsters are a fear.

Vassar was high on S’s list, but he chose Bowdoin, in part because he felt he didn’t have to be either his “creative” or his “athletic” or his “intellectual” self, but could be everything rolled up into one. At Vassar, and at some other schools, like Wesleyan and Skidmore, it seemed there was more of a divide. He was told by some students at those schools that even though everyone got along pretty well, students tended to identify and socialize with one group or another. From our visits to those other campuses, I’d say there were more students who’d be described - in appearance at least - as “artsy or hipster.” I’ll defer to current students for their impressions.
