Performing arts at Bowdoin?

I tried this question in the ‘ask a student a question’ thread (which, admittedly, is a pretty old thread) and was greeted by crickets, so I think I’ll give it another go under its own banner.

My question is this: can anyone comment on the level of artsy-ness on the Bowdoin campus, particularly relative to its peer LACs? Are there a lot of dance, theater, and a capella student groups? How are the facilities? Will a kid whose main non-academic interests lie in those areas be happy at Bowdoin?

We haven’t made it up to Maine yet, but as a point of comparison, we were pretty dazzled by the beautiful theater/dance centers at Middlebury and Williams, and both schools seem to have active arts communities. On the flip side, we went down to Davidson, which is a great school in many respects, and learned that they have a single dance instructor and their only studio is a windowless room in the basement of the gym. Where does Bowdoin fall on this spectrum? The only thing we know is they rarely put on musicals, which D particularly enjoys, so that’s not an encouraging data point.

I recall seeing this last year and it was rather interesting…

Angelique Kidjo came tonight. She’s a pretty amazing musical artist.

To answer your question, I think you’ll have plenty of opportunities at Bowdoin for performing arts. There are multiple plays going on now.
