I am suggesting that the OP should assess their attributes against those that these two colleges are telling the world are important to them. And in doing so I mention two that may not help the OP at Williams.
In that spirit, I would also include the fact that about 34% of Williams students are recruited athletes. The vast majority of them are likewise encouraged to apply via Early Decision.
Seeing the breadth of intended majors, incl. English, Art, but also religious studies, design, architecture, I had wondered if they should run the NPC for Barnard - either to disqualify it, or to see if the numbers happen to make sense for them.
It also fits various other stated parameters, e.g, city “proximity” (especially considering air travel), the feel of a smaller school, combined with the course catalogue of the major university, gun control,…
This post from someone on another recent thread seems relevant here:
It’s a good time for a friendly reminder that schools’ institutional reporting departments complete the CDSs (not admissions), so CDSs may not always be accurate and/or currently reflect how admissions evaluates applications. This is true of the CDS GPA calc which I’ve often mentioned, as well as the box of important factors in section C.
The OP did not start this thread in order to read about recruited athletes. The OP’s daughter is not trying to be recruited as an athlete. Take this discussion elsewhere.
I have also deleted a number of posts that were derailing this thread, as well as posts that were rude, condescending, or snarky.
Brown no longer includes home equity when calculating financial aid, so definitely reach out to them.
Here’s that info directly from Brown (it’s possible the NPC isn’t updated) -
Additionally, I second the suggestion of Smith upthread. They offer a LAC version of an architecture program and seem otherwise to be a potentially good fit for the student. They offered us good aid in keeping with the NPC prediction.
I ran the NPC for Brown and I was surprised that it came out above our threshold compared to other schools in the same price range that don’t consider home equity. I wonder if their NPC hasn’t been adjusted since they stopped considering home equity. I will reach out to them.
This is really good to know about Brown!
My daughter has been reluctant to consider women’s colleges but maybe she needs to reconsider. Her social circle has always been predominantly female and I think she’s hoping college will offer her more opportunity to expand socially. I imagine there would still a lot of co-ed opportunities if she took advantage of cross-registration with other schools.
Good luck!
Also, I just sent you a DM. Let me know if you have any trouble accessing it.
Earlham is also Quaker-based and one of the Colleges that Change Lives (as is Clark).
