As a soon-to-be sophomore, what should I be getting involved in...

Last year as a freshman, I spent the entire year hanging out with my suitemates and really just not thinking about any of the programs and clubs offered on campus. Basically, I took 3 quarters of GE's, did fairly well in them, but devoted my time to having a lot of fun and screwing around.

Now that I'm about to be a sophomore (Poli Sci major), I want to start getting serious but I have no idea where to begin. One of my primary concerns is looking for an internship to get by next summer -- where should I look and who should I talk to? I'm also hoping to study abroad sometime during my junior year -- any advice from someone who has done this? What will I need to prepare and how long is the application to apply?

Lastly, I met a woman where I work who recommended I join Circle K -- does anyone know if our chapter is worth joining?

Thanks for your time.

For the internship, definitely try the AIP program, I loved it. The office is in Warren and they have a database of possible internships. You get academic credit and you just write a 10 page paper at the end, it was probably one of the best things I’ve done so far at UCSD. You do have to have 90 units to get one though.

Study abroad applications are usually due RIGHT after winter break, in the first couple weeks of January. Check the Programs abroad website to see the deadlines from this year - they likely won’t change. I will be abroad this fall and I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!

what if you’re say, a sophomore and you want to study abroad the summer after sophomore year? would you still apply around January of sophomore year? thanks!

^Yes. But generally, you should visit the Programs Abroad Office (right across from Center Hall on lib walk) by October/November for your “first steps” meeting and to get all the information you need. You have to have an appointment with an advisor for some programs, so it’s good to get started early and then finish your application over winter break. Don’t save it for the last minute.

Alright, thanks ucsandiego915!

Great information.

I’ll definitely look into this AIP program you mentioned. Is there a certain time during the year when internships tend to be offered the most? As for applying for one, I’m assuming the earlier I try the better? Lastly, what about the “career” fairs that seem to always be taking place every few weeks? Are they worth visiting or are they mainly for people looking for actual off campus jobs? Thanks for your time!
