Penn State requires a 2.5 to be considered for transferring in, meterology requires that with 8 credits of calculus based physics and 8 credits of analytic geometry as well. The program is extremely competitive, as I imagine you know.
Actually not true @greenbutton. The department accepts as many students. They told me when I went and visit Penn State. What are my chances for admissions accepting my application?
Not to derail the thread, but I’ve been curious/confused – did you get a 2.88 this past semester, making your cumulative somewhere between 3.04 and 2.88? Or is your cumulative now 2.88, meaning your last semester’s GPA was much lower, as it brought a 3.04 down to a 2.88?
Assuming your cumulative GPA is 2.88 and Stonybrook didn’t dramatically lower their entrance requirements from when I was applying to colleges in the mid-'90s, that cumulative GPA is not likely to get one admitted to Stonybrook even as an in-stater unless you are eligible for special programs for low-income underrepresented groups like SEEK.
And if your parents can afford sending you to Penn State OOS, it’s unlikely you’re eligible for those special programs.
@thumper1 Not yet. I’m applying this September, but will attend in fall 2017.
“8 credits of calculus-based physics and 8 credits of analytic geometry as well:” will be completed in the next three semesters(spring 2017).
@dadof1 I’ve heard of Millersville University. It’s a nice school. Thanks for the reminder!
@woogzmama I’m in college. going to into my fourth semester! I’m staying for one more year.
@cobrat What does cumulative GPA mean? is it the same as Unweighted GPA?
@bodangles Since you stalk me a lot, you probably know the answer already
I…don’t, that’s why I’m asking. It sounds like maybe you’ve been saying “Now I have [semester GPA]” when in reality you have three semesters’ worth of GPAs ([semester GPA] averaged with [past semesters’ GPAs]). Probably higher than 2.88, overall, so whatever your total/cumulative GPA is will a) be better for your app and b) be more accurate for chancing.
I don’t mean to seem like I’m stalking you, either. I hang out on the Latest Posts and Penn State pages and we seem to be online at similar times. Sorry.
Difficult to rise the overall GPA after 3 semesters.
For example, if you have 45 credit hours at GPA of 2.88, and you’ll taking 15 credit hours in the Spring 2016 semester. You’ll need GPA of 3.76 in this 4th semester to rise to overall GPA of 3.10
Going off of what you’ve posted in the past I am finding it impossible to come up with the right numbers – your second semester, for example, was straight B’s except for a W, which should be an even 3.0, so I don’t know where the 0.04 comes from. Maybe you ended up taking another class you didn’t post about. But anyway, I think how this calculator works is that you…
Enter the first semester up top, find the GPA for that, write it down. Also write down how many credits were in your first semester.
Enter the second semester up top, find the GPA for that, write it down. Enter first semester GPA and first semester credits in bottom ("new cumulative") boxes, find cumulative GPA, write it down. That GPA now represents first sem + second sem. Write down how many credits were in first + second semesters.
Enter third semester up top, find the GPA for that, write it down. Enter cumulative GPA found in #2 and first sem credits + second sem credits in "new cumulative" boxes, find total cumulative GPA, write it down. That GPA now represents first + second + third semesters.
My calculations said 3.0 first sem, 3.0 second sem, 2.57 third sem for a total cumulative of 2.84. But like I said I could not get the 3.06 and 3.04 numbers, was only going off of what you’ve posted in chance-me threads in the past.
