Hi,
I have been meaning to ask this question for awhile. I am a student, applying to several of the boarding schools and noticed an oddity. Asheville is asking for the social security number, it is not a requirement simply a request. I am probably not going to give it.
Does anyone know why?

None of the other schools I have looked at have asked for it so I don't understand the potential reasoning.

I realize that a few people have looked, if any of you might know, or know of other schools who ask this even before admittance, would you be willing to post thoughts or comments on that or what this might be about?

My daughter’s school asked for her SS number on the application form. I didn’t mind giving it, since the likelihood of the admissions staff misusing it would be extremely low.

I am surprised. I wouldn’t give my child’s or my SSN to a school on the application. If we needed FA, I would give mine on the proper financial aid forms, but not on the application itself.

It surprises me that a school would ask for a child’s SSN in today’s age of identify theft.

They’ll have it if they pull your tax forms so it’s really not much of an issue. If its optional, don’t provide it if it makes you uncomfortable. If it’s not, don’t sweat it.

But you’ll see the same information requested at college time. These days - for better or for worse, the SS has now become a national ID.
